Steve Harland, owner of Good Scents Florist in Oakley, continues to showcase through actions rather than words that his family owned and operated business has a big heart for the community and helping when they can.

When a student from Freedom High School asked Harland to donate some flowers for Homecoming, Harland one-upped the request by offering to donate bouquets for the King, Queen and the entire Homecoming Court.

“These are hard times for some people financially,” said Harland, who was happy to help support Freedom High Students with $250 worth of fragrantly beautiful hand crafted bouquets.

Harland is known to have a soft spot for others. While some florists have cut off dates that orders have to be in by, his shop keeps an open door policy for orders even on the day of the event which is a great for those who sometimes forget to plan ahead.

“I’ve had guys come in tuxedos and limos pull up the day off,” said Harland.

While Harland tries to accommodates everyone, he does recommend planning ahead.

“It’s always good to order early,” he says.  “You’ll get the specific color you want and can select so many custom options.”  He also has some advice. “Don’t be afraid to go with something different,” he says.  “Try spring mixes or orchids.”

Good Scents Florist carries a tremendous assortment of ribbons and knows how to “bling out” a bouquet.  They carry jewels, custom arm cuffs, silvery cuffs for those who want a keepsake, and even strings of LED lights that dazzle the bouquet.

These bouquets are so beautiful that many people want to preserve them.  Harland shares a secret for that as well.  “The best way is to buy silica sand from a craft shop,” he says. “Put some in a shoe box with the bouquet and cover it with the sand.” The sand will suck all of the moisture out and the arrangement will be preserved.

Another example of Harland’s big heart is this florist hasn’t raised prices for corsage and boutonnieres for over ten years.  A three rose corsage is $25 and a double rose boutonniere is only $10.50.

There are additional fees for blinging bouquets out, but the standard bouquets are classic and beautiful and can still be customized with different colored roses and ribbon.

Here are a look at some of the featured fall flowers which can be purchased from Good Scents Florist.

Steve created a wonderful floral tribute for my husband’s memorial service. He incorporated branches from his own pear tree and tules from the Delta to represent my husband’s special interests. I was so pleased.

Every time I see Good Scent on the set up list for a Brownstone Garden Wedding, I know that the flowers will be beautiful AND delivered on time!
