Friends of Marsh Creek Set for Delta Clean Up, Volunteers Wanted

Marsh Creek AD

The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed (FOMCW) are proud to announce that Marsh Creek Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, September 21sth, from 9 am to Noon at 9 different locations along Marsh Creek, its tributaries & the San Joaquin Delta. Volunteers will clean trash and debris from nearly 15 miles of creek and about 5 miles of shoreline.

Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed conduct this event in partnership with the Cities of Brentwood, Oakley & Discovery Bay, East Bay Regional Park District, California Coastal Commission, Contra Costa County Stewardship Grant Program, Contra Costa County Flood Control & Clean Water Program, Reclamation District 800, Delta Protection Commission, Supervisor Mary Piepho , Oakley Youth Advisory Committee, Terracare & Associates, and Village Community Resource Center!

The 2013 Cleanup will look to build on the success of past year’s event, when hundreds volunteers turn out to remove approximately thousands of pounds of debris from Marsh Creek and the San Joaquin Delta. FOMCW is proud to have ADDED Discovery Bay to their cleanup this year. Executive Director Diane Burgis is also an Oakley City Council Member and Commissioner on the Delta Protection Commission. FOMCW is partnering with the Delta Protection Commission on sites in Discovery Bay.

“This is a great event for folks of all ages and abilities to help clean up trash along our trails and in our creek” says Executive Director Diane Burgis. “People always enjoy the event and feel a real sense of accomplishment when they see all the trash they helped clean up. These cleanups help make where we live look nicer, helps improve habitat for the creatures that live in and along the creek, and helps protect our drinking water.”

The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed Creek and Delta Cleanup is a part of the California Coastal Commission’s California Coastal Cleanup. Last year over 400 volunteers cleaned up just 6 tons of debris from creeks and trails in East County. Data gathered from cleanups in the past few years reveal the need to continue to find strategies to prevent trash from getting in to our water ways. A large number of what is picked up in Marsh Creek is plastic bags, food wrappers, Styrofoam, cigarette butts and construction materials. 60 to 80 percent of the debris found on California’s beaches originates from inland or urban areas and washes out to the ocean.

Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed thanks their partners and sponsors for helping making this happen.
