Feb 25 – March 2: Antioch Police Briefs

According to Antioch City Manager Steve Duran, the Antioch Police Department had 1,715 calls for service between February 25 through March 2.

Of those calls, 85 arrests were made. 40 arrests were felony and 45 were misdemeanor. They also made 3-DUI arrest.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES

  • On 3/3/16 at 3:26 am, an officer was conducting an area check for an unrelated call on Rodeo Cir. when he observed a Saturn crashed into a tree in front of a home on Rodeo Cir. The vehicle’s ignition was on and they located the driver, 19 year old Michelle White asleep behind the wheel. After a series of field sobriety tests she was determined to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and arrested. She was transported to county jail.
  • On 3/3/16 at 3:18 am, the victim flagged down officers while walking on A St near Railroad Ave. The victim was bleeding from his head and stated he was just assaulted by 44 year old Frank Mello on Helmuth Ln. Mello was contacted at Helmuth Lane and admitted to the assault advising he was upset because the victim broke his Cuisinart scissors so he punched him in the face. The victim signed a citizen’s arrest and Mello was arrested for the assault. Mello was released on a signed promise to appear.
  • On 3/2/16 at 10:17 pm, officers were dispatched to the 5100 block of Arroyo Way for a report of a suspicious Toyota Prius parked in front of the location. While en route, the caller provided dispatch with the license plate which came back stolen out of Hayward PD. As officers arrived, the Prius drove past one of the officers and ended up circling around and driving back in front of the address. The driver, 22 year old Darrius Evans pulled over and was taken into custody without incident. When questioned about the vehicle, he explained that he rented the car from the original owner in order to be an Uber driver. This worked out well for several weeks until he could no longer make the rent payments. He then returned the car. The victim stated Evans did return the car but stole it two days later. Evans was booked and later sent to county jail.
  • On 3/2/16 at 9:07 pm, an officer conducted a stop on a suspicious person riding a motorcycle. He recognized the driver to be 35 year old Cory Kautzman and knew him to be on parole. During a parole search, Kautzman had photos on his cell phone of him holding a revolver as of 3/1/2016. Kautzman also had an empty concealed holster for a small firearm in his inner jacket pocket. A search next to Kautzman near a bush is where an officer located a loaded .38Cal revolver which was the same one depicted on the cell phone. Kautzman was arrested without incident. He was booked into county jail.
  • Justin-Griffin-Antioch-PoliceOn 3/2/16 at 10:07 am, SOU Detectives were in the area of Fairview Ave and Somersville Rd when they saw 28 year old Justin Griffin in a newer vehicle and knew him to be a parolee-at-large. Griffin is a violent Norteno gang member. They also had information that he may be armed with a firearm, and that the vehicle was stolen. The vehicle (and Griffin’s physical) matched that of the recent sedan that was taken in an armed carjacking at AMTRAK on 2/29/16. As officers arrived in the area Griffin immediately fled. While northbound on Somersville Rd towards HWY 4 Griffin attempted to cut through the Valero gas station. When he came out the other side he side-swiped another car which disabled his vehicle. Griffin fled on foot and was quickly caught on the run after discarding a taser. Griffin fought with officers in the parking lot of Auto Zone and was taken into custody after a brief confrontation. The vehicle was confirmed to be the one from the carjacking at AMTRAK. Griffin was medically cleared at a local hospital and he was booked into county jail. An officer injured his right hand during the incident.
  • On 3/2/16 at 12:29 am, an officer was in the area of Contra Loma Blvd and Hwy 4 when he conducted a records check of a white Acura as it entered the on ramp to westbound Hwy 4. The vehicle turned out to be a stolen vehicle from BART in Concord. The officer followed the vehicle on Hwy 4 until cover units arrived and a traffic stop was conducted. The vehicle yielded on the off ramp to Harbor Dr in Pittsburg and a high risk stop was conducted. 36 year old Maquetta Sanders was the driver and stated she recently purchased the vehicle. She was arrested and sent to county jail on charges of auto theft and possession of stolen property. She also had an outstanding felony warrant for identity theft.
  • On 3/1/16 at 2:44 pm, officers contacted 21 year old Adrian Morales seated in a vehicle with expired registration on D St and W 19th St. Morales was on felony searchable probation so a search was conducted. 1.7 grams of heroin was found on Morales. He was arrested and booked into county jail.
  • On 3/1/16 at 10:11 am, Antioch Detectives were conducting follow-up on a case at 417 San Joaquin Ave when they observed a cold plated stolen vehicle nearby. They informed patrol officers of the stolen vehicle. Officers attempted to set up in the area to conduct surveillance of the vehicle but the vehicle moved as officers arrived in the neighborhood. An enforcement stop was conducted and the driver immediately stepped out of the vehicle with his hands up. 38 year old Earl Wyatt was taken into custody without incident and sent to county jail.
  • On 2/29/16 at 8:30 pm, 3-20 year old victims were seated together in a car at Dallas Ranch Park. An unknown make or model silver sedan pulled in behind them and an unknown adult male approached them and asked if they wanted to buy marijuana. They told the suspect they were not interested and they went about their business as the suspect left. Approximately 1-2 minutes later the same vehicle returned and a male approached the driver door with a mask covering his face. The male pointed a hand gun at the victims and demanded all wallets and cell phones. The victims complied with the demands. There was approximately an hour delay in the victims reporting the crime as they went to Clayton to use a girlfriends phone to call police.
  • On 2/29/16 at 2:22 pm, the victim came to the lobby today to report an armed carjacking the occurred at the First St. AMTRAK station on 2/28. The victim stated she was at AMTRAK to pick up a friend when she was approached by an adult male who was armed with a handgun. The male pulled her out of the vehicle while the keys were still in the ignition and then fled in the vehicle. The victim called a family member for a ride but did not think to call the police until today. The vehicle was a rental from Enterprise.
  • On 2/29/16 at 3:19 pm, officers were working a two man proactive assignment in the area of 9th Street due to recent drugs dealing issues. They made contact with 23 year old Richard Bridges who attempted to avoid contact at first. During a pedestrian stop, Bridges was found to have a small amount of heroin in his possession. He was cited for drug possession.
  • On 2/28/16 at 11:10 pm, an officer was in the area of Cavallo Rd and W Tregallas Rd when he observed a black Honda sedan traveling with no headlights struggling to maintain a lane. The officer initiated and enforcement stop on the vehicle and contacted the sole occupant 21 year old Jesus Garcia. Garcia showed objective symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Field sobriety tests were conducted and Garcia was subsequently placed under arrest as a result of his performance. Garcia was transported to county jail for DUI where he consented to a blood draw.
  • On 2/28/16 at 4:28 pm, an officer located a suspicious occupied vehicle parked in front of 617 W 19th St. with several possible Norteno gang members around it. As the officer drove closer, the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle failed to yield to the officer. The driver 38 year old Amadeo Garcia pulled into the driveway of the Baywood apartments on San Jose Dr. and was taken into custody without incident. Garcia was on searchable probation. The officer searched Garcia and located an empty gun holster and several .38 caliber rounds of ammunition as well as gang paraphernalia in the vehicle. He was transported to county jail.
  • On 2/28/16 at 8:05 am, an officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a vehicle driven by 27 year old Richard Cordova. During the stop, the officer learned Cordova was on felony searchable probation. A probation search of the vehicle was conducted and Cordova was found to be in possession of 271 Xanax pills and $480 in cash. He did not have a prescription for the pills. He also admitted to having text messages in his phone that would suggest he was furnishing the pills to other persons, but refused to allow the officer access to the phone. Cordova was arrested and sent to county jail. His phone, money and pills were booked in evidence.
  • On 2/28/16 at 4:11 am, Contra Costa Fire and APD officers responded to a reported vehicle fire in the parking lot of Antioch Auto Diagnostics at 808 W 10th St. A Lincoln Town car was found fully engulfed in the lot. A Ford Fiesta next to it also caught fire. A gas can nozzle was on the ground nearby with the melted gas can on the roof of the Town car. A Contra Costa Fire arson investigator responded and took over the investigation. No one from the business or the vehicle owners could be located at the time.
  • On 2/27/16 at 9:27 am, an officer contacted 32 year old Joseph Cannon in the 600 block of W 19th St. During a search Cannon was found to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine. Cannon was and later released pending lab results after being interviewed.
  • On 2/27/16 at 2:19 am, officers responded to a report of debris in the roadway at Lone Tree Way and Deer Valley Rd. Upon arrival, a city light pole was found knocked down in the center median with vehicle debris and shrubs all over. In the vehicle debris, there was the front license plate of the responsible vehicle. Officers responded to the registered owner’s address and found the totaled Honda in the driveway. 19 year old Maria Orocio and her father, Gustavo, were contacted at the residence. Maria stated she was driving and had just dropped off a friend and was heading home. She and her friend were coming home from partying in Oakland. While there she had consumed an unknown amount of alcohol. She was heading home from her friend’s house when she blacked out and crossed over the center median and struck the light pole. She recalls coming to and continuing to drive home and parking her car in the driveway. She stated that is when the police arrived at their house. Orocio was not injured, but her car was totaled. She had the strong odor of alcohol on her breath. She submitted to a preliminary alcohol screening and was found to be over the legal limit. Based on the information and her admission to driving, Orocio was arrested and brought to APD for a blood draw. She complied and was released from APD to her father. Corp Yard responded to pick up the pole.
  • On 2/27/16 at 2:58 am, 28 year old Darrius Carley began causing a disturbance at the Holiday Lodge located at 1500 W 10th St. He called for APD assistance. Due to all officers being tied up on other calls and not responding immediately, Carley called again and added that there was a subject with a knife in the parking lot. When the response was still not to his liking, he called back and stated people were in the motel bleeding from being assaulted by an unknown subject with a knife. Once officers arrived, they confirmed there was never a fight or an assault. Carley was found to be intoxicated in his room and stated he made the assault and knife claims to get officers there faster to help him get his money back for his room. Carley was arrested and cited for making a false report.
  • On 2/27/16 at 12:25 am, officers were dispatched to the apartments located at 3421 Hudson Ct on a report of an assault. Upon arrival, it was discovered 38 year old Adrian Gutierrez had arrived home after consuming some alcoholic beverages. His next door neighbor was music playing, which upset Gutierrez. Gutierrez went and knocked on the neighbor’s door, and when she opened it Gutierrez poked the neighbor in the chest with his finger as he entered her apartment. The neighbor grabbed a wooden stick and hit Guiterrez in the head two times in fear of him. Gutierrez suffered swelling to his forehead and an ambulance responded to the scene. Gutierrez was ultimately arrested for battery and public intoxication and sent to county jail.
  • On 2/26/16 at 4:20 pm, officers were dispatched to JC Penney’s on a report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, it was discovered a male entered the store and stole large amount in fragrances and exited the store without paying. Loss Prevention attempted to stop the male in the parking lot. The male pulled out a set of brass knuckles and told loss prevention to “come and get it.” In fear, loss prevention let the male flee; however, they were able to obtain a license plate on the male’s vehicle. Officers did some follow up and discovered a possible suspect. The case is still being investigated by officers with additional follow up needed.
  • On 2/26/16 at 11:00 am, officers did some homework on 5113 Ebbetts Wy due to several stolen vehicles recently being recovered near this residence and found that it was a problem house. A probation search was executed and several subjects were contacted inside. The location was found to be a chop shop and there were car parts (license plates, doors, radios, removed VIN’s, rims, tires, etc.) lying about everywhere in the side and backyards and in the garage. A CHP auto theft investigator responded and opened a case and assisted with our investigation. A firearm was also recovered from the backyard. At the end of the investigation, 36 year old Andrew Diaz was arrested on warrants and possession of stolen property. 31 year old Christian Robbins and 21 year old Casey Whitlatch were arrested on warrants and stolen property charges. They were all transported to county jail.
  • On 2/26/16 at 1:39 am, officers were conducting a security check of the Days Inn located at 1605 Auto Center Dr when they saw 33 year old Karen Walker and 35 year old William Portillo pull into the lot and park in a handicap parking stall and exit their SUV. On e officer recognized both of them and they were contacted. During the contact, a probation search was done and Walker was found to have a two credit card magstirp machines and several stolen identities. A subsequent search of Portillo and the rest of the SUV located a large sum of money and paraphernalia indicative of narcotics use and sales. A search warrant was obtained for Portillo’s motel room. More evidence was recovered related to sales. Both were booked into county jail.
  • On 2/25/16 at 7:45 pm, Officers were dispatched to a call of shots fired at the Dollar General store at 20 W 10th St. While en route, updates were coming in of two vehicles involved in the parking lot; a white Jeep Cherokee and silver Cadillac. According to the reporting parties, the driver of the Jeep shot twice at the driver of the Cadillac and both vehicles fled prior to our arrival. We did locate one 9mm shell casing at the scene. An extensive area check was conducted and several white Jeeps were contacted but found not to be involved. Area hospitals were notified but so far no victims have come forward.
  • 2/25/16 at 10:32 am. On 2/23/16 an electric golf cart was stolen from Sutter Delta Hospital by two males. Today, dispatch received a call regarding a male recklessly driving a golf cart on Carpenteria Dr towards Safeway. An officer located the golf cart parked in front of Safeway and conducted surveillance until 31 year old Faafouina Tinoifili got into the cart and drove off. Tinoifili was stopped in the parking lot and arrested. He admitted to stealing the golf cart because he was high on methamphetamine and didn’t feel like walking. Tinoifili was transported to county jail and the cart was returned to Sutter Delta.
