EBRPD: Hiker Missing in Sunol Regional Wilderness Found Dead

Search and rescue crews located a body believed to be that of a missing hiker just after 2 p.m. Thursday, April 16 in a remote area of the Sunol Regional Wilderness.

Alameda County Coroner deputies were headed to the Maguire Peak area Thursday afternoon to identify the body and begin an investigation.

The body was spotted by East Bay Regional Park District rescue crews from the District’s helicopter.

Irwin “Don” Meyers, 70, of Palo Alto was reported missing at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, after he didn’t return from a hike. Rescue crews searched the area until about 2 a.m., then resumed searching at daylight.

More than 40 personnel from East Bay Regional Park District Police, East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department, East Bay Regional Park District Rangers, East Bay Regional Park District Search and Rescue, Alameda County Fire, Alameda County Search and Rescue, San Francisco Water Department Rangers and the California Highway Patrol participated in the search.

There appears no evidence of foul play.

On April 15, 2015 at approximately 6:50 p.m. the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department received a report of an overdue hiker at the Sunol Regional Wilderness, located in unincorporated Alameda County. The reporting person said her 70-year-old partner, Irwin “Don” Meyers, had left Palo Alto around 9:30 a.m., planning to hike the Maguire Peak Trail. Mr. Meyers was expected back for a “late lunch” but had not returned.

The East Bay Regional Park District Police along with the East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department, East Bay Regional Park District Rangers, East Bay Regional Park District Search and Rescue, Alameda County Fire, and the California Highway Patrol helicopter responded and conducted a thorough search of the area until the early morning hours with negative results. Additional resources, which include the East Bay Regional Park District helicopter and the Alameda County Search and Rescue, resumed the search at daylight.

Mr. Meyers is described as a white male adult, 70 years of age, 5-foot-10 with a slender build and dark hair. Mr. Meyers has hiked the Maguire Peak Trail prior and is considered to be in good physical condition.   Mr. Meyers’ vehicle was located off of Welch Creek Rd. near the Upper Maguire Peak Trail entrance. At this time, there appears to be no evidence of foul play.
