Deer Valley High School Senior Earns $200k Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Scholarship

by ECT

Deer Valley High School announced that Emma Crandell, a senior at Deer Valley High, Antioch CA, has been selected to receive the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship worth $200,000 by the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station Antioch.

Emma Crandell plans to attend University of San Diego and be a part of the Midshipmen which are one of the largest uniformed bodies of students in the nation that provides hands-on leadership experience and enhances a world-class education.

Naval ROTC programs educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy’s unrestricted line, the Navy Nurse Corps and the Marine Corps. They receive 100% full tuition, books, fees and other financial benefits at many of the country’s leading colleges and universities. Upon graduation, midshipmen are commissioned as officers in the US Navy or Marine Corps.

The school also reported that over Spring Break, as an Ambassador Level Girl Scout, she completed her Gold Award Project by remodeling the CBI Garden at the school. She worked for months to set up a construction crew, organize and train volunteers, fundraise for supplies and worked with the CBI team to assess our needs. Her focus was on creating more accessibility within the garden for all of our students. The original path was recompacted and sealed and an additional path was constructed to allow for walker access out to the flowerbeds. Emma also built 5 raised wheelchair accessible flowerbeds. She obtained a majority of materials through donations and working with local companies and then fundraised for the materials that couldn’t be donated.

Emma and her volunteers gave up a good portion of their Spring Break to help out. The project involved tons of weeding, pruning, laying new mulch and installing a new irrigation system.

Awesome work, Emma, and all of Antioch’s young people who are managing to keep their noses to the grindstone and do great things.
