ANTIOCH, Calif. – It is with heavy hearts that the City of Antioch shares the sad news that Council Member Gary Agopian has passed away.

After serving on the Antioch Unified School District Board, Gary Agopian was elected to the City Council in November 2010.

During his tenure as a City Council Member, Gary served on the City Council’s Budget Committee. These were challenging financial times for cities, particularly Antioch, but the City Council made difficult decisions to adopt fiscally responsible budgets.

Gary was also instrumental in the creation of the Graffiti Subcommittee. Not content to just be on the Subcommittee, Gary could often be found with a paint brush in hand, talking to business owners and helping paint over graffiti.

Gary continued his interest in Antioch youth and the School District by serving on the City/School Relations Committee, as well as a member of the Community Facilities District.

As a Council Member, Gary also served on the Northeast Antioch Annexation committee that helped shepherd the annexation of nearly an additional 600 acres into the boundaries of the City of Antioch, including 488 acres of historically industrial land that includes not only the NRG and PG&E power plants, but also Federal Dunes Wildlife Preserve.

In addition, Gary served as liaison to the Chamber of Commerce, on the Community Advisory Board to the S.F. Bay Water Transit Authority, and as the City’s representative to the East County Water Management Association.

The City Council and City staff join with the Antioch community in offering our condolences to Gary’s wife, Robin, and their three children.

Arrangements for a funeral service will be made known at the family’s request.
