VALLEJO, Calif. – Detectives assigned to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Golden Gate Division (GGD) Special Investigations Unit arrested two suspects in connection with separate freeway shootings that took place on Bay Area freeways in June and July of this year.

On Tuesday, June 14, officers assigned to the Castro Valley Area office responded to a report of a freeway shooting that occurred on eastbound Interstate 580, east of Grand Avenue. Officers located the victims, whose vehicle had sustained a single bullet strike through the front windshield. Fortunately, neither of the occupants in the vehicle were injured.

The ensuing investigation identified Julaan Faison, 24, of San Leandro, as the primary suspect in the shooting. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and on August 16, detectives took Faison into custody without incident. CHP detectives booked Faison into Santa Rita Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

On Thursday, July 21, Contra Costa Area CHP officers responded to a report of a freeway shooting that occurred on Interstate 680, north of Stone Valley Road. Officers located the victim, whose vehicle had been shot several times. Fortunately, the occupants in the vehicle were not injured as a result of the shooting.

The ensuing investigation identified Edwin Tobie III, 29, of Pleasanton, as the primary suspect in the shooting. A warrant was issued for Tobie III’s arrest, and on August 18, detectives took Tobie into custody without incident. During the arrest, detectives seized several firearms as well as evidence of drug trafficking activity. CHP detectives booked Tobie III into Martinez Detention Facility on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon (firearm), shooting at an occupied vehicle, and various firearms-and narcotics-related violations.

“Public safety is the top priority of the CHP,” said Golden Gate Division Chief Chris Costigan. “Freeway shootings are a serious crime, and the CHP fully investigates each incident.” As these are both ongoing investigations, additional information regarding the incidents will not be released at this time.
