Kudos to the Antioch and Berkeley Police Departments this evening as its been shared with me in an email that this morning’s SWAT action on Peppertree Way in Antioch was related to the February 4 murder of Zonte Jones in Berkeley.
Javon Calland, 21, of Oakland was arrested in Hayward and booked into Berkeley City Jail for a murder that occurred on February 4, 2013 near the intersection of Delaware Street and San Pablo Avenue.
This morning based on information gathered during the investigation BPD Detectives along with BPD’s Special Response Team executed a search warrant in the City of Antioch. BPD Detectives are continuing their investigation into the murder of Zonte Jones.

Berkley Police Make Arrest in February Homicide
Berkeley, California (June 18, 2013) – City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) Homicide Detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Zonte Jones. Jevon Calland, 21, of Oakland, was arrested and booked into the Berkeley City Jail on June 16, 2013 for murder, PC 187.
On February 4, 2013 at approximately 11:08 a.m., BPD patrol officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired, with a victim down near the intersection of Delaware Street and San Pablo Avenue. BPD officers arrived on scene and discovered a single victim down, suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, Zonte Jones was transported to a local hospital by the Albany Fire Department. The victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Detectives have been gathering evidence and pursuing leads in relation to Jones’ murder since February. Detectives developed information implicating Calland as a suspect in Jones’ murder and an arrest warrant was sought. Calland was arrested by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in Hayward on an unrelated warrant. BPD was then notified that he was in custody. BPD took custody of Calland and booked him into the Berkeley City Jail. The case has been forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging.
This morning based on information gathered during the investigation BPD Detectives along with BPD’s Special Response Team executed a search warrant in the City of Antioch. BPD Detectives are continuing their investigation into the murder of Zonte Jones.
BPD would like to thank the Antioch Police Department, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and East Bay Regional Parks Police Department for their assistance provided during this morning’s operation.
In the interest of maintaining the integrity of this investigation, BPD will not be releasing anything further at this time.
