AUSD Looks to Fill Board Vacancy After Claire Smith Resignation

by ECT

The Antioch Unified School District Board of Education is seeking applications to fill a vacancy on the Board caused by the resignation of Claire Smith on April 1, 2016.

The applicant will fill the remainder of her term, which expires December 2016.

Smith resigned after serving on the Board for 21-years in order to spend more time with her grandchildren. They have sold their home and move out of the area.

“We have been blessed to have lived in Antioch and I feel very humbled to have been able to serve the people of AUSD for 21 years.   We are now going to spend all our time with our grandchildren!!  And, yes, we will be helping in their classrooms,” said Smith.

Smith also said she learned from every board member she had served with including 6-superintendents noting she was confident in the direction the district is going.

In November, the AUSD appointed Fernando Navarro to fill Barbara Cowan’s seat after she resigned in September. A total of 11-applicants applied for the seat.

The School District is currently searching for a Superintendent after Don Gill was placed on Dr. Donald Gill was placed on paid administrative leave through June 30, 2016. Last September, Gill announced he would be resigning at the end of the school year to be closer to his family.

Currently, Stephanie Anello is serving as interim superintendent of the district.
