AUSD: Claire Smith Set to Resign; Says Wednesday Was Her Last Meeting

On Wednesday, Antioch Unified School District Board of Trustee Claire Smith announced she is resigning as a member of the board. Wednesday would be her last meeting.

An email into Smith has not yet been returned, however, President of the Board Diane Gibson-Gray confirmed the news saying Smith has sold her house quicker than expected and was moving to Southern California to be with her family.

Gibson-Gray did add that Smith still has to formally resign before any process can begin to fill her seat.

Smith was up for re-election this fall after serving 21-years on the school board.

In November, the AUSD appointed Fernando Navarro to fill Barbara Cowan’s seat after she resigned in September. A total of 11-applicants applied for the seat.

The School District is currently searching for a Superintendent after Don Gill was placed on Dr. Donald Gill was placed on paid administrative leave through June 30, 2016. Last September, Gill announced he would be resigning at the end of the school year to be closer to his family.
Currently, Stephanie Anello is serving as interim superintendent of the district.
