Antioch Unified School District Set for Public Hearing on Charter School Petition

by ECT

On Wednesday night, the community will have a chance to listen to a proposal to open a charter school within the Antioch Unified School District.

The meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at Lone Tree Elementary School Multi-Use Room located at 1931 Mokelumne Drive in Antioch.

The move comes in response to the October 12, 2016 regular meeting, where the Antioch Unified School District received a charter school petition from Rocketship Education to form Rocketship Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year. Pursuant to Education Code § 47605 (b) the Board of Education must hold a public hearing within thirty (30) days of receipt of the petition.

According to their website, within the San Francisco Bay Area, there are ten Rocketship schools in San Jose, one school in Redwood City and one school in Concord together serving over 6,000 students.

Rocketship will make its case based on its application and give the public a chance to respond. The District will then make their recommendation on the proposal where the School Board will make a decision on December 7.

During the election which concluded Tuesday, Trustees Fernando Navarro and Alonzo Terry who were both appointed to the board, received money from people tied to the Rocketship Charter School–including a Board Member. Navarro and Terry each reported on their 460-Report that they received $125 from Gregory Stanger.

After learning the Stanger was on the Rocketship Board of directors, Terry returned the check.

In the final weeks of the election the California Charter Schools Association paid to send out three full-color mailers to residents pushing for candidates Navarro, Terry and Chrystal Sawyer-White.
