Antioch: Taco Bell to Close Dining Room at Deer Valley Plaza After School

by ECT

taco bell deer valley

Beginning Wednesday September 17, Taco Bell located in the Deer Valley Plaza in Antioch will be closing its dining room from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. It’s drive thru will remain open.

According to Sabas, their manager this is not a temporary closure, but will remain permanent throughout the school year due to the violence in the plaza and problems caused after school.

Since the beginning of the year, Deer Valley Plaza has been the location where students are loitering, fighting, vandalizing businesses and disrupting traffic.

The issue of the Deer Valley Plaza has been requested to be placed on the Antioch Unified School District Boards next agenda.

I understand that the McDonald’s at Deer Valley Plaza also closes their dining area in the afternoon when DVHS lets out for the same reason, but keeps their drive-thru open.

EastCountyToday Sep 17, 2014 - 11:23 am

Arne, per a reader, we have now added that info as well.

Jerry Sep 17, 2014 - 11:27 am

I hope they don’t start a riot when they go and it’s closed.

The Relentless Sep 17, 2014 - 11:33 am

I hope they all starve to death. Problem solved.

Denice Sep 17, 2014 - 11:37 am

This is a very sad reflection of what parents have taught their offspring – to behave like animals. The other business’ in the area will soon follow suit.

DG Sep 17, 2014 - 1:37 pm

It’s a reflection on what parents have NOT taught their kids. They didn’t teach them discipline, manners, consequences, humility, or right from wrong. They raised a bunch of animals.

Ed Sep 17, 2014 - 8:36 pm

unfortunately, now that kids are “taught” to call the police if you touch them, has kinda allowed the “animals ” to run wild. Before then, parents would WHIP their kids ass when bad stuff happened. Now, call the cops. They cant do anything. Until a crime is committed.

The cops are too heavy handed, mom and dad wont do a damn thing, so Tyrone and William are running loose with no restrictions,,,,,,,,Until the COPS catch them doing something wrong….Then its the COPS fault for catching them and using force to make them submit….BUT, It the cops fault BECAUSE little Tyrone and William watched TOO many MTV shows showing fighting the POLICE was the right thing to do, even if your WRONG!!!!!

Tenisha Sep 17, 2014 - 10:39 pm

Tyrone really

Tyrone Sep 18, 2014 - 6:31 pm

No, no. Tyrone & William works. It’s Black & White.

Harleycodr Sep 17, 2014 - 11:42 am

Learn to spell. It’s ONE n in dining room.

Tiffani Sep 17, 2014 - 1:30 pm

And that’s would be THERE’S one N not IT’S one N. Don’t correct people when you’re just as ignorant.

Tiffani Sep 17, 2014 - 1:31 pm

And before you try and get lippy…mine was a typo. Not bad grammar.

J Wayne Maderos Sep 17, 2014 - 5:21 pm

Tiff, how is that a typo? The word isn’t misspelled it’s misused. Lol

Grammar Man Sep 17, 2014 - 5:42 pm

Actually, “it’s” and “there’s” are both incorrect! “It is” and “There is” are called expletives. The correct sentence is, “Dining has 1 n.” :))))

Casey Sep 17, 2014 - 7:03 pm

Actually, Tiffani, yours was bad grammar. A typo, aka typographical error, “includes errors due to mechanical failure or slips of the hand or finger, but excludes errors of ignorance, such as spelling errors.” So, writing “thats” instead of “that’s” would be a typo; using the completely wrong word would be bad grammar.

GHETTO

SoSad Sep 17, 2014 - 11:59 am

Where is Antioch PD and the City Council – How in the world do you continue to keep your job when the city is burning all around you? The Mayor and the Chief of Police should be ashamed! You only need to look 5 miles down Lone Tree to see what an active Mayor/Police Dept can do for a City (Brentwood). Get your act together or resign!

BrentwoodResident Sep 17, 2014 - 8:09 pm

So quick to blame Antioch PD. They have been there but even with 4 or 5 cars it is not enough. If you haven’t seen them work go out and watch them at the plaza. Next time you are in trouble call a crackhead maybe they can help. Lol

RJB Sep 17, 2014 - 12:00 pm

I wonder what demographic makes up the majority of the students at Deer Valley High? Isn’t it considered one of the most dangerous high schools in California? How is their academic pogram?

Yup, AUSD is the biggest failing school district in the Bay Area. Want to know why? Just look at the leaders who run the district, take note how they are related to people who run the city of Antioch. Nothing but poor leadership by incompetent people.

THANKS GHETTO THUGS FROM DVHS FOR RUINING THE DEER VALLEY PLAZA FOR THE REST OF THE GOOD CITIZENS OF ANTIOCH!! err.. not!

Foodmaxx is no longer 24 hours because ghetto pieces of crap keep stealing from that store. McDonalds and Taco Bell now close their doors because THEY FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES!

Next thing you’ll hear is Taco Bell and McDonalds is racist because they won’t allow ghetto thug kids to come in and harrass/threaten the workers.

And what are our city leaders doing abou tthis? Absolutely nothing because they are cowards, led by the biggest coward of all, Mayor Harper.

Maria Sep 17, 2014 - 1:32 pm

I’m a proud parent of a student who attended and graduated from DVHS in 2014. I’m extremely offended by the comment that “all students that attend DVHS are thugs and/or ghetto”. I strongly disagree with the comment. Our 18 year old son graduated from DVHS last year and was accepted to over ten (10) Universities across the US with scholarships from each and every school. He is currently attending a four year University out of state on a full academic scholarship. I am aware that there are those teens that refuse to follow the rules and are out of control but we shouldn’t classify all DVHS student body as ghetto / thugs because that’s far from the truth. Also, I’m having a difficult time understanding how this problem is our city leaders, APD or AUSD problem and why they should be held accountable for these unruly kids. As a parent of three young men myself, I’m a firm believer that education begins in the home. Parents need to take responsibility for the way their children behave outside their home. Parents need to lead by example.

RJB Sep 17, 2014 - 1:53 pm

@Maria

I’m not sure if you meant to reply to my post specifically, but where did I say that “ALL” students at DVHS are ghetto?

Ramona Sep 17, 2014 - 2:06 pm

That’s awesome about your son. Congratulations!

J Wayne Maderos Sep 17, 2014 - 5:28 pm

Maria, I don’t think you know what quotation marks are used for…..I do not see those quotes anywhere on this entire blog….if anyone brings up a topic why is there always some dumb random bish that gets offended and brings an entire group into it…do you think anyone would truly believes that 100% of kids there are ghetto….have you not seen the scum piece of crap kids that walk around that city??? Seriously, this is why changes do not happen…be aware ….because some idiot gets offended every time good changes are attempted….

Maria Sep 18, 2014 - 10:15 am

@ J Wayne Maderos – Error on my part. I misread the comment posted by RJB and apologize for that. I don’t disagree that there are those bad apples that attend DVHS and Dallas Ranch Middle School but both schools also have some amazing students as well. In response to your statement “there always some dumb random bish that gets offended” you are behaving no different than those kids at the plaza that you are on here complaining about. I’m all for change…change is good! Have a blessed day!

r Sep 17, 2014 - 1:47 pm

Preach on!!!! That’s why I left. I grew up in Antioch. My entire life, thought I would raise my family there. But yes we need to get people who actually care about the city not there wallets. Same damn people running since I was a kid. It’s ridiculous what Antioch has become. Always in the news; and not for anything positive.

Julio Sep 17, 2014 - 2:27 pm

It isn’t the” same damn people who run” every time. Take a good look. Do not elect Tiscarino and do not elect Dianne Gibson Gray. He has done nothing in 2 years and she has done nothing for the school district….look what we have! You have 6 others to pick from!

lisa Sep 17, 2014 - 3:00 pm

True!

shar Sep 17, 2014 - 3:31 pm

Wow. That Tiscareno you are talking about is my uncle. And yes he has done things to help. Why don’t you shut your mouth and go run for office if you think you can do better. Antioch was a shit hole before Tony tried to enter office. And he is trying to turn that dump you call home into a more liveable and less crime populated place. Such ignorant people. Main reason I left that shit hole. I refuse to raise my kid around such ignorant animals.

RJB Sep 18, 2014 - 5:14 pm

@shar

So you praise your Uncle, who represents the city of Antioch, then you bash the same city, calling it a dump and a shit hole?

Boy, the apple sure does not fall far from the tree does it? Thanks for exemplifying what kind of family YOU come from.

———-VOTE NO FOR TISCARENO—————–

He was never voted in by the people of Antioch. We were forced to accept him into office by our coward mayor.

Countrygirl Sep 17, 2014 - 3:39 pm

What great things have you done Julio ??

Julio Sep 20, 2014 - 6:16 pm

Been here 50 years, am 75, done more in my life for this city than you or Councilman Tiscarino will ever do. There are a lot of people just like me.

lisa Sep 17, 2014 - 2:59 pm

Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherry Sep 18, 2014 - 9:06 am

Well said RJB

JimSimmons 42 Sep 17, 2014 - 12:03 pm

Hope those of you who are parents at DVH are proud. You are closing businesses because you cannot parent. Shame on you! Control your damn kids and teach them some respect.

Mama Trace Sep 17, 2014 - 1:15 pm

Offending by the broad comment, I’m parenting just fine and have control over my child. It’s been mentioned before, considering there are over 2K students attending DVHS the ones creating havoc are a small % of that number.

B-real Sep 18, 2014 - 12:09 pm

Very True! I go to Deer Valley Plaza often after school. I see a small precentage of DVHS students (40-50) teenagers running around acting stupid and often fighting. Just stating the obvious, they are all black females & males. This small group gives DVHS a bad name. Unbelievable how that small group can not be delt with appropriately.

kathy Sep 17, 2014 - 1:17 pm

Eliminate section 8 housing..they will all be unable to live off our tax dollars and move back to the ghettos from which they came..problem solved

trent Sep 17, 2014 - 1:34 pm

Back to Oakland and Richmond they will go. We all know who they are. 30 yr ago when I was a kid Antioch was like Martinez. White trash. No longer the case now

Kerri Jones Sep 17, 2014 - 2:18 pm

Do you realize that Antioch is the ghetto? Most of those people have probably lived there for a few generations. The ghetto is everywhere here. Some places just see more action than others.

FourRazors Sep 17, 2014 - 1:05 pm

We moved from Antioch 13 years ago. Such a shame to see a nice area become a cesspool. Only had to pay Mello-Roos taxes for a couple of years. If we didn’t move to Indiana then, we definitley would have moved out of Antioch.

Maria Sep 17, 2014 - 1:07 pm

I’m a proud parent of a student who attended and graduated from DVHS in 2014. I’m extremely offended by the comment that “all students that attend DVHS are thugs and/or ghetto”. I strongly disagree with the comment. My husband and I bought our home and moved to Antioch in 2000. Our 18 year old son graduated last year from DVHS and was accepted to over ten (10) Universities across the US with scholarships from each and every school. He is currently attending a four year University out of state on a full scholarship for academics. My son had a close group of friends while at DV and all of them graduated and have moved onto four year Universities across the US. We shouldn’t classify all students that attend DVHS as thugs and ghetto because that’s far from the truth. I am aware that there are those teens that don’t follow rules and are out of control and are ruining for those that follow rules. Also, we shouldn’t be blaming our city leaders, AUSD or APD for these problems. As a parent of three young men myself, I feel education begins in the home. Parent lead by example.

Russell Roesner Sep 17, 2014 - 1:11 pm

You can also thank the United States Military for using up the majority of tax payer money to create a society divided between the “haves” that send their kids to private schools and the “have nots” where most kids don’t have a chance at an education due to over crowded schools and kids not getting the attention they deserve to get a quality education.

jeff Sep 17, 2014 - 2:22 pm

Are you smoking crack? That is the most idiotic thing I have ever read.

Rachael Sep 17, 2014 - 2:56 pm

RJB Sep 17, 2014 - 3:20 pm

For why Sep 17, 2014 - 4:31 pm

Robert Sep 17, 2014 - 4:37 pm

As a member of the United States Navy and a former Antioch resident, please don’t ever reproduce and create other human beings dumb enough to believe that idiotic drivel you just wrote down here Mr. Roesner.

rose Sep 17, 2014 - 7:53 pm

what has the military got to do with demon kids raised by evil parents?

Kim Sep 17, 2014 - 8:27 pm

My kids go to public schools, always have, always will and we can afford to send them to private. My kids get straight A’s and are very respectful kids. You know what my secret is?????? Discipline. They respect me, the neighbors, their teachers, their peers, the community, their school and the fact that they will be PUNISHED and suffer CONSEQUENCES for sloughing off, disrespectful behavior, not putting their best foot forward with their schooling, etc.

They don’t get to play sports, or hang with their friends, etc., if they are not performing to their full potential in school. They aren’t allowed to run the streets, they can go no where with out my approval. If I don’t know who their friends are or the parents of their friends, they don’t go.

My kids are expected to treat each other with kindness, compassion and to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. If they ever bullied a person, they would suffer extreme consequences for their actions here at home by our authority. This behavior starts in the home, PERIOD.

There are plenty of single moms, and or homes where both parents have to work to make the mortgage payment who are raising kids the same as mine and their kids are the same as mine. This is a parent problem that is creating a community problem. And there is nothing anyone can do about how a person parents. Unfortunately, this is becoming the norm for our modern day society.

To sit behind a computer spewing out hate mail isn’t going to solve anything. If you hate what is happening in your community then get out into the community, take some leadership and work with families of these kids to help them be better parents. And if you cannot help the parents….. help the kids. Get involved and make a difference.

Nish Sep 17, 2014 - 10:49 pm

Well said we need more parents like you

B-real Sep 18, 2014 - 12:12 pm

Oh my Russell, that is just dumb.

Military Brat Sep 21, 2014 - 7:15 am

Mr. YOU ARE A COMPLETE DISGRACE to this COUNTRY !! Have u any clue that because of our brave U.S.Military, allows u to even voice a stupid and shameful opinion like that..??? AND IF U DON’T LIKE THIS COUNTRY..THEN get out of it!!

Also, JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IS POOR..Doesn’t mean they don’t know the difference between right & wrong, or have self respect..or MAKE A CHOICE TO appreciate & get an education !! private or public THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME TEXT BOOKS TO LEARN FROM!!

Jessica Sep 17, 2014 - 1:17 pm

This is what Antioch has come to… I can only imagine the next 5 years.

Jessyca Sep 17, 2014 - 1:18 pm

I have gone there during that time period with my kids. While their language is abhorrent and they are annoying, assuming these kids are thugs shows the ignorance of the readers. If a person wants to be a thug then they go somewhere else. These kids may take a permanent marker to something but they are not threatening someone with it or using a weapon. Again, it is annoying and time consuming to clean up the marker, but it does not make a person a thug.

Yes, these kids could use a lesson on respect and acceptable behavior. So place some undercover cops in there to catch them in the act and then put them in community service. Closing dining rooms or placing the blame on someone else is just making an excuse.

If you want a change to occur then start by stepping up yourself to help make the change.

RJB Sep 17, 2014 - 1:57 pm

Jessyca, you’re hilarious!

I was there when the fiasco happened the other day at Deer Valley. The workers at the restaurants feared for their lives!

Oh let me guess, you’re one of the absentee parents of these ghetto thugs from DVHS.
Yeah. That’s what I thought.

Jessyca Sep 18, 2014 - 6:13 am

No I am not one of their parents. My kids are too young to be even in kindergarten let alone high school. Assumptions only make an ads out of you.

RJB Sep 18, 2014 - 5:08 pm

@Jessyca

“These kids may take a permanent marker to something but they are not threatening someone with it or using a weapon.”
– I don’t think you are familiar with the criminal acts such as fighting, drug dealing, assualts, and robberies that take place in and around the Deer Valley Plaza / DVHS. I guess you don’t recall or have not even heard about the group of kids who were ROBBED AT GUNPOINT at the skate park across the street. The robbers attended the same school of the victims!!

If I were you, as a mom of young children, I would seriously OPEN YOUR EYES to the crime around you.

Futhermore, don’t ASSUME that these ghetto criminal minded thugs are angels because I’ve got news for you lady, you will be far more of an “ass” to think they the gun they are pointing at you is fake. They are really robbing you.

Rather, in your case, you may consider “ads” instead of “ass” because of your spelling error.

H Sep 17, 2014 - 1:18 pm

It’s a shame it has to be taken this far. However, let’s not get confused that all DVHS students are the ones causing the problem. My sister is a junior with an academic achievement of a 4.0 plus. Many of you ask where are the parents of the students? Well there you go, that’s the answer: many of these students do not have parents. And sadly, many of these students are not involved with any academic clubs, sports, and activities. So yes, let’s hire more police, but also let’s hire more mentors that these kids can look up to. Let’s get groups going that these adolescents can attend to. If you want the change to happen, then be the change and do something, sign petitions, vote, etc.

BrewerBros71 Sep 17, 2014 - 1:23 pm

i have the video from the fight that caused them to do this and all the people calling them ghetto from Oakland are completely wrong. it was a mixture of races there so while your signaling out one, several races was represented in the altercation. Not just black but white and mexican was involved. the videos are up on youtube if any of you from the races that never commit any crimes would like to go look.

Where did Antioch go wrong??????? Sep 17, 2014 - 8:33 pm

Brewerbros71.
I don’t know if you are color blind but I just checked YouTube 9\7\2014 titled fight in taco bell parking lot Antioch ca. I see nothing but black girls swinging at each other. There is not even a white or hispanic person anywhere to be seen. That deer valley plaza has been a problem ever since DVHS opened. When you get smoke shops and foodmaxx in a parking lot you know you have reached the end of the line. I do not say that all the problems are based on young black people but our juvenile society has followed the rap culture into the gutter. Rap music originally was about how good you could be or what you could do. Now it is bitch this, suck that, I’m a killin mofo. This is what is bringing our society down. No respect for anything.

Lashondra Sep 17, 2014 - 1:40 pm

I WISH THEM TO GO BACK TO THE DIRTY HELL HOLE THAT THEY ALL CAME FROM!

Jeanie R Smith Sep 17, 2014 - 1:48 pm

If I had a business in that plaza I would band the business owners together to purchase a high quality surveillance system and hire security guards AFTER I established a relationship with the District Attorney and received assurances that the kids will be prosecuted. The perpetrators AND their parents should receive EXTENSIVE community service sentences. The school should also punish the kids caught behaving badly after school by having the parents pay for after school suspensions at which time those kids should be doing their homework and preforming janitorial duties at the school. THEN you will see a positive change all the way around. Everyone involved in these kid’s lives needs to be held accountable and help to get them on the right path. Parents should also be forced to seek psychiatric care, AND should attend the Parent Project Sr. Workshop which is available at the Brentwood John Muir hospital location.

The OWNER of the shopping center needs to step up again and make it safe for everyone. If they don’t I would move my business out. The OWNER of the shopping center needs to hire security and keep it there all the time. I have not shopped or gone to a movie there in 5 years at least.

Larry T Oct 6, 2014 - 2:22 pm

Why strategic threat management? Why not proficient Protection Agency?

Ellebelle Sep 17, 2014 - 2:50 pm

Entitlement. Be they black, white, yellow, Christian, Atheist, Jewish…..doesn’t matter. The incredible sense of entitlement that a majority of the people now living in Antioch has is astonishing. Th all of you that have said these kids’ parents were at work…ya right. More like sitting at home, banging out kids for the almighty dollar and tax break! Living rent free or mostly. Eating off food stamps free. Driving $60,000 cars and living in homes nicer than most working families can afford. Living each day like royalty! Free healthcare. Working the system. Roaming the streets at all hours. Walking to the 711 for a 40 and some Swisher Sweets but u can’t pay for your kids’ school lunch? Carrying that Michael Kors or Louis bag with your nails did but can’t afford to wash your kids hair and put them in appropriate school attire? O wait, youre the one who fought the school uniform rule–saying it was racist and you couldn’t afford special clothes either. Teaching your kids that police, even the black ones, are enemies and we’re only put in place by the white man!
Really? I have to pay for my food with money I earn working 2 jobs to pay for a home, a car, 3 children, and those pesky school loans I took out in order to better my life. But, if you are a minority…come to Antioch, where you can live rent free, on food stamps, in a palace on the hill…while driving your Escalade..and poppin’ out 10 kids to get the extra money! Roam our streets and threaten our senior citizens to the point they’re terrified to walk the neighborhoods they built! Tell your kids it’s fine to ignore and defy authority while I teach mine respect and law. I’d give my left arm to be able to be a stay a home mom…so I could truly raise my kids…but I can’t because I pay for you too! Ya..those years of oppression and slavery were my fault right? I’m 37 and had no more to do with slavery than you know a piss pot amount about the real African heritage! I don’t see thug Jewish people poppin off about their struggle with Hitler and how the world owes them their lives! I myself was abused as a child–I’m not running around terrifying people, destroying property, theiving, and creating havoc…I’m a hard working citizen that works unhealthy hours in an ER saving the shit ass lives of people like you! Why? Because somewhere…sometime…I’m hope that someone will knock some common sense into you all and you will realize that no one owes you a damn thing for any reason. You were born. Did you have a shit ty childhood? Oh, me too. Grow the hell up and do something with it!

Right on Ellebelle!!!

Rob Sep 17, 2014 - 3:09 pm

Whatever happened must have been very, very bad for Taco Bell to resort to such desperate measures. I can’t really say that I’m surprised by this. It’s indicative of a much larger problem. Some kids (maybe a lot, who knows) don’t go home after school. Instead, they hang out at local businesses, and that’s when they sometimes get into trouble. In a perfect world, kids would either go straight home, to sports practice, to a part-time job, or to some after-school program offered by DVHS.

The school district and/or the city might want to look into launching a public awareness campaign that encourages those things (home, job, sports, after-school program)….anything but hanging out at local businesses. I’m not sure heightened security is the best long-term solution. You have to change the way people think. Hanging out at local businesses should be STRONGLY discouraged by DVHS and the city of Antioch. (Yes, the parents too, but I’m just not going down that road.)

Taco Bell’s solution is just a band-aid. They rid themselves of the problem, but kids will simply go somewhere else. Who’s next to close their doors from 3:00-4:30? Carl’s? Burger King? Subway? What if a bunch of DVHS students started hanging out at Starbucks after school and began causing trouble? I certainly don’t see Starbucks closing from 3:00-4:30.

It will be very interesting to see what happens next. Like I said, I predict that Carl’s or Burger King are next.

Peezy Sep 17, 2014 - 3:11 pm

Take away their parents section 8 an send them back to Africa!

Monica Sep 17, 2014 - 3:29 pm

I am very disappointed that Taco Bell has to close their dining room doors durning business hours. I agree where is our Major and police department. What I do not agree with is when you blame all of DVHS when it is a very small amount of bad kids that are causing the problem. My son graduate for DVHS last year and is not attending college. I spent a lot time volunteering my time at the school and always said that if I felt my son was in danger I would pull him out. I never felt he was in danger and neither did he. Please do not bash DVHS unless you have spent some time at the school and with the kids. The large majority of the kids are great kids. The bad kids make up a very small percentage. Remember you only hear the bad stuff. Before you bash DVHS any more spend time on the campus with kids I am sure you will change your mind. Remember on the bad stuff is reported.

Maria Sep 18, 2014 - 9:50 am

The ignorance in these responses is amazing. So many of you are so quick to judge adults and adolescents that you don’t even know. It’s a shame that instead of coming together to find a solution, people would rather point fingers and blame other people. Ridiculous.

Lori Sep 17, 2014 - 3:35 pm

The entire responsibility for this lack of security and the conditions of the property fall onto the owner. We have met with many of the merchants and have formed a Merchants Association, in hoping that the owner would step up and do the right thing, as in hiring armed security guards and making the shopping center safe.

Three letters were mailed to the owner, with no reply.

Food Maxx was one of the merchants who took it upon themselves to hire their own armed security guards. They do not patrol the property, as that is the owners responsibility. They are there for their customers only not the whole center.

To make a change here, I believe that we need to contact all the corporate offices of these business’, and let them know what is going on and how unsafe this shopping center is. If they want me shopping here, then they need to make some changes now !!!

I as a parent of a Junior at DVHS have witnessed several of these fights located within the plaza. On several occasions I have called the police department just for them to show up, yell out their mega phone, honk their horn and NOT get out of their vehicles to handle the situation. It is a sad state of affairs when it seems like the police department is too afraid to exit their cars to handle the situation. Yet again today at the corner of Deer Valley and Lone tree two males were going at it while dozens of students watched. I called APD and they said they were across the street. UMM NO, I was facing the area they said they were in and there were NO APD and then the dispatcher became hostile and rude and told me ” we have this” and promptly hung up. I watched as 2 policed cars arrived from beyond the water park just to drive by and NOT arrest anyone. If APD is not going to arrest anyone then the problem won’t ever be handled. These kids know that there are NO consequences for these actions and therefore continue to fight and disrupting the local businesses and traffic along the area. As far as the academic side of DVHS, it offers mediocre classes at best. My daughter has tried for years to get into required classes just to be pushed into something else because the classes are full. I had to battle with her counselor just to get her a science class this year ( so she can have enough credits to enter into a university instead of a community college first to get those credits), just for her to be tossed into a boo boo science class and be made to drop an elective she actually wanted. I had to fight for her to get into a 3rd year of a foreign language. At this point I am weighing my options, do I keep her in a school where there are constant fights on and off campus, counselors only enroll in minimum classes needed to just graduate, yearly class schedule mess ups or do I pull her out and homeschool her? I never thought coming from the central valley I would have to deal with these issues here as well. I moved my whole family up here for a better education and safer environment.

Where did Antioch go wrong???? Sep 18, 2014 - 5:01 am

Well ms. Central Valley you moved to the wrong place. Your comment about the police is flat out dumb and shows how stupid you really are about how things work in the real world. Have you ever seen the near riots that occur at deer valley plaza when APD rolls up and attempts to make arrests. When APD gets out of the cars it causes kids to start running or just flat out block the entire parking lot. The fights are usually between 2 or several little asshole kids that will turn on the police when they try to stop it with a large crowd gathered. Have you ever seen when the kids start throwing bottles and stuff at the police that try to intervene? You must not have so shut you dumb ass mouth. You are just another parent that probably should go back to the Central Valley. You should have done better research on antioch before moving here. Antioch schools have been failing for ever, which is shown in their state scores and rankings.

just wondering Sep 17, 2014 - 4:41 pm

I think it is high time for those businesses in that area to shut their doors permanently and leave…. that will send a message to the city council…

RJB Sep 17, 2014 - 6:08 pm

The only thing the mayor and city council will do is look at that situation with a blank face. They are all clueless to running a city. Nepotism runs rampant with Rocha’s clan. Her family runs the school district and she runs the city council. She’s been running it for over 12 F’n years and look where Antioch is now. As for Harper? That guy is a coward towards crime. Tiscareno is just as useless as Wilson.

Marty Fernandez Sep 18, 2014 - 5:45 am

Have to say RJB Wilson is the ONLY one on our side but one cannot do it alone. To form an opinion you have to meet with these council people. Your assessment of the rest is accurate.

RJB Sep 18, 2014 - 5:16 pm

Perhaps, but I think she needs to do more if she does in fact represent an action based leadership for the better of Antioch.

Trina Sep 17, 2014 - 4:53 pm

Parenting failure, unfortunately that window of opportunity to teach them well has closed. First 4 foundational years gone. Now this is the result. They are brats, they are thugs, they are consumed with the err of entitlement. The only possible corrective course of action at this point, that is effective is, setting an example by having zero tolerance. Break the law, disobey authority end up behind bars. No more catch and release. They need to be in juvenile detention facilities in programs that teach consequences for your actions. If they don’t learn and rise above. They have set their own course. There are children that want to succeed, they deserve to be able to live without fear each day from these trash bags.

Bubba Sep 17, 2014 - 5:25 pm

The problem, I suppose, is that housing has been made affordable to a spectrum of people. If prices are inflated to only allow home ownership to white-collar workers (say, only doctors and lawyers) of the same skin color, Antioch can return to being “The Moraga of East County”, and all the problems (aside from cocaine) will vanish…they can wear their plaid golf pants with pride and no fear of diversity. Every sandwich will e served on Wonder Bread with the crust removed, and plenty of mayonnaise.

J Wayne Maderos Sep 17, 2014 - 5:29 pm

The good ol life lol

Julio Sep 17, 2014 - 6:26 pm

In 50 years I have never thought of Antioch being the “Moraga” of East County. I personally know of no golfer in Antioch that wears plaid golf pants. You Bubba are part of the problem.

Kaitlyn Sep 17, 2014 - 5:05 pm

Ok as a dv student, I know it has its reputations about fights and stuff but at the same time don’t just judge every student and think we’re all the same cuz were obviously not. In saying that, I think it’s rude as hell to say ” I hope they starve to death” cuz that’s just messed up. Like I said dv kids aren’t all the same so people shouldn’t treat us like we’re all criminals.

Kat Sep 17, 2014 - 5:34 pm

You can place the blame on section 8, the parents, etc. but the truth is these kids are out of control and someone needs to step up to the plate and do something about the situation and stop worrying about being PC. I believe this all started when DVHS first opened and they were busing in kids from Richmond and possibly Oakland. It is my understanding that there was some kind of contract made with these other cities. I have lived here since I was 10 yrs old and am now 69. The change is very very sad.

S. Sep 17, 2014 - 5:43 pm

It’s entertaining that all of you -spewing hatred, disrespect, and calling each other names and pushing racism and classism and insults- are modeling the exact behavior that you’re complaining the children are exhibiting, and is the cause of your favorite trash food restaurants being closed briefly after school. Way to go, contributing to the problem and ensuring it continues. Can’t you wait a few minutes for your chalupas and mcnuggets?

Garrett Sep 17, 2014 - 6:01 pm

I don’t blame them one bit. Grew up in that area and glad I left as a business owner I would not keep my doors open for students who don’t make a purchase to come in and disrupt business for other paying customers. Should have happened sooner.

Richard Gonzales (@DickGonzo) Sep 17, 2014 - 6:12 pm

Stricter more extensive proof of residency for DVHS would put a dent in the amount of incidents the shopping center has. But that topic is like beating a dead horse. The NAACP will jump on that issue as soon as the first mouth opens. Even if color is never mentioned. I’m Latino and have been paying Mello-Roos tax for 18 years. If you don’t know what Mello -Roos tax is, you “probably” don’t live in Antioch and therefore your kid shouldn’t be going to DVHS!

Thank Mayor Harper for bringing Section 8 from Oakland, Richmond. He said that himself in the African Graduation. He was sooooo proud of bringing all those people…!!! I was in shock and realized that is why there are so many thugs and the city forcing us to pay mello roos for all that kind of people…

Julio Sep 18, 2014 - 3:45 pm

Maria: The city isn’t forcing you to pay Mello Roos. You may have bought a house with Mello Roos but that is your fault young lady. These folks were here long before Wade Harper started taking credit for bringing them here. I don’t know how he could be so powerful except in his own mind.

Unfortunately this reminds me too much of the Gas City Riots. Those cost the school district a lot of money and this will too.

Chuck Sep 17, 2014 - 6:18 pm

The problem is not white or black. The problem is no self respect, no responsibility, and no self esteem. Look around trash is trash no matter the color. What I do not understand is when you go through a neighborhood that is mostly section 8 the area is loaded with trash, tagging, and total disrepair. You would think a person that has nothing to do while on welfare could just pick up after themselves and show a little respect to the people paying for their illegitimate children and home. Instead, trash is dropped everywhere. These people still sit on their assess and take from society instead contribute. The next law needs to be a drug test for everyone on any public assistance. If they fail , no more free money.

Being a student from Antioch High, I usually go to the fast food restaurants in Deer Valley Plaza on the way home, real upset now that the Drive-Thru’s gonna be really packed now.

Way to ruin it for the rest of us, guys.

Kevin Sep 17, 2014 - 9:39 pm

It seems the only way to resolve the politics of antioch is to close up shop and eventually leave. No wonder most comercial buildings are like ghost towns. The city is almost a lost cause. So sad because it wasn’t like that when I grew up. Now it’s just overflow for failed programs.

Jan Cooke Sep 17, 2014 - 9:54 pm

I didn’t know that the Deer Valley Plaza was bad or scarey until one day I got into my car after shopping there. These teenagers got in front of my car and refused to move. So I waited patiently but they still would not move. I instinctly knew not to aggravate them or come out of my car. My car was still on drive mode. I pretended to pick up a book and started reading. Finally the group of teenagers moved slowly away and I quickly left and vowed I would never come back to that area again. I do drive by often. Its sad to see these teenagers hanging around that area and the businesses are losing customers. A lot of these kids don’t even live in that area. They come from other cities. I know this because my friend is a teacher in that area.

AJ Sep 18, 2014 - 12:16 am

I attended DVD many years ago, graduated, and moved on with my life I remember even as a freshman and sophomore walking to school and then walking back home after school. There were fights every now then but not to this extent. I am sad to see that businesses like Taco Bell and McDonald’s have to go as far as shutting down there dining areas after school hours. I am sure many more businesses will follow. Moreover, that does not solve the problem at the plaza, that is more of just a temporary fix. The city needs to step in and start cleaning things up.

Antioch has become a dumping ground, as it accepts anybody and anything. Students from DVHS are like wild animals. But, that is not the children’s fault. It starts with there parents. And as people have mentioned, the parents roll around in Benz’s and they do live in a palace. The parents don’t give a daMN about there children, because if they did, half of the school would not need to be at the plaza after school. The parents that drive the Benzs and live in the palaces need to come pick there kids up.

I would not be surprised if businesses started closing shop and moving out of there. Who the hell wants to do business in a jungle with wild animals running around?

You don’t even feel safe walking around in that plaza. The APD are not doing a damn thing about it either. Parents please start discipline your kids and teaching them sone respect.

Certain races always feel that they are targeted because of their skin color, socioeconomic status, but what are people to think when they not only read about this stuff, but see it just about all over Antioch. And it’s mostly minorities that cause all the problems. If you cannot change your self, how can you get other people to respect you and look beyond the stereotypes?

The behavior that these children present in there teen years is what lands them in prison later in life. If they don’t learn now, they never will

d stuck in Antioch Sep 18, 2014 - 3:18 am

Well we all know that the apples don’t fall far from the tree. These troubled kids usually have parent(s) that are troubled. It may go back a few generations, who knows? These kids have been taught by example to take as much as you can instead of taking care of themselves. So as time goes on things snowball, as does everything in this world. These troubled people need to learn about love. How many of these kids get told by their parents that they are loved? How many hugs do they actually get in a week? It should be a daily thing. Almost every day I tell my kids that I love them! I make sure they know when they do wrong that there is consequences, but I always try to make sure they know how proud I am of them when they do good, even if it is something small. Sometimes love includes punishment. I’m not talking about hitting or spanking, that is a whole other topic, but punishment by losing their privileges or something that is special to them or doing extra chores and work, then earning their privilege back. But always make sure they understand why they are being punished, not just for their misbehavior but because we want them to grow up to become an awesome person.

Parenting is a super hard job and a lot of parents are lazy or just have no clue on how to parent….and our culture is teaching our kids to do as little as they can to earn the most money. Actually, being able to work, especially doing physical work is hard but a blessing. It has a lot of advantages, but seems to be looked down on by society. I love being able to physically work and take care of things myself, instead of hiring someone to do everything for me. The harder something is the prouder I am of what I accomplished and it helps keep in shape.

I wish i had a glorious solution to this growing problem with Antioch and America, All I know is that Most of us need to not be so lazy or maybe i should say sedentary, love our kids to death, teach them respect by expecting them to respect their parents and elders and pass out more hugs! Doing good feels so good…and doing bad feels so bad…I’m not sure why people don’t get that. It’s gonna take a lot of years and a lot of money as well as tons of people’s personal time to turn this town around, it can’t be done by just the police or the school district. The people who run this town also need to have higher expectations for what happens here. I have lived here for 44 years and have seen it all change for the worst.

The kids in this town need something to do. It’s so sad that we can’t even have a basketball hoop in our court…it got ticketed and taken away by the city. When I was young we had great summer school classes for free…like art, and sports, and dancing…yes it was free! Now we are nickel and dimed to death to just buy pencils and paper for our kids to go to school. So sad that the big wigs salaries keep going up and the school supplies and activities keep disappearing. Another thing that happened in my daughters elementary school…she was in 2nd grade and was holding her friends hand as they walked and a yard duty told them to stop holding hands and not to touch each other…sweet innocent little girls being friends were told that that was wrong…what is our society coming to? So many people are sue happy and this makes everyone paranoid that we cannot even be humans anymore.

With all the neglect and fear that many kids face each day we need to help the situation instead of making it worse. Maybe instead of yelling out the window at a punk and telling them they are a piece of crap…we need to yell out “love ya” or tell them something positive or maybe just a friendly wave…even if we are raging on the inside. It would be hard but maybe those punks might think someone cares about them a little. I wonder if it would make a difference.

Julio Sep 18, 2014 - 3:52 pm

Stuck in Antioch, maybe they could go home and do their homework. Then they could get a good job and work their way up in life. That is what life is all about.

You are right it isn’t just Antioch it is America. THAT is the hardest part.

mark Sep 18, 2014 - 3:22 am

Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring at Los Pollos Hermanos wouldn’t have it. Punk kids would be disappearing one by one. I offer no opinion or solution, I dwell where it’s civilized and policed.

Anthony Sep 18, 2014 - 5:58 am

I’m surprised it took this long, that shopping center has been horrible since that school opened…

kc Sep 18, 2014 - 7:15 am

Okay now, from what I’m reading it’s the parents fault, the school, and the police. I say we point the finger at the individual. This stuff happens everywhere near a high school. The cops could target the area and arrest folks and cite them for jaywalking, smoking and everything else under the law. Then you as parents become upset and say the police are racist. Most kids are taught the police are the enemy. The school needs parent volunteers to curb this activity. Parents believe other parents when told little Johnny did badness. As a retired police officer, I have found drugs and weapons on kids only to have the parents blame me for setting the kid up. Parents need to be involved in school. Look at the areas who don’t have a this problem and I guarantee there is parent involvement. And for the cop bashers, go on a ride along and you will see and hear what they actually do.

Paul Sep 18, 2014 - 11:39 am

Blame section 8 and the owners buying property at a cheap rate, renting it out to the hood folks. Never knew Antioch is the new Oakland for the last 6 years. If something happens, no one will do anything unless you sue the city, this will settle instead of messing with the hood folks.

SLW Sep 18, 2014 - 8:52 pm

So True Paul.. Antioch is a mess and soon as I can escape with my kids I’m moving them to another city that is more friendly to raise kids.

concerned for safety Sep 18, 2014 - 10:48 am

I used to work there and have personally been pulled into the violence inside taco bell. There are good kids that come in to eat but quickly learn it isn’t a good idea. I believe that it isn’t always the parents fault but our legal system also. I’m a old school mom and believed in spanking if a child of mine was involved in such actions. The law now would say it is child abuse, but look now what the kids are doing without some kind of action to discipline. I’m so thankful I quit working there. I’m so glad my children are grown now. The innocent are not so innocent anymore, parents need to wake up. Children do not rule this society the adults do. Act like you have a set.

Robt Sep 18, 2014 - 12:12 pm

Antioch used to be such a nice quiet farming community. Thanks to the City Fathers, that all changed in the late 1980’s. Has continued straight thru today. What a waste of a town.

Tiela Sep 18, 2014 - 3:36 pm

Here’s a perfect example as to why the children in the AUSD are unruly, because the adults in the city can’t even propose solutions on a news report page. I’m a graduate of the ’09 class, and I was very involved in my school. At the time, we (my classmates and myself) loved school. We all got along. We all participated. And that was a direct result of our leadership. Mr. Bergerhouse and Mr.Isador were the best thing that ever happened to that school. Unfourtunately, (for reasons I will never understand,) the concept of co-principals was removed. Worst move ever! And now, I’m embarassed to say I once attended that school. But it’s not just Deer Valley High. The district has FAILED in my opinion from the middle school level and up. The parents of these students are also failing. And to be completely honest, shutting down businesses and plazas is catering to these children and their naughty behavior. Finally, it’s not the job of the Antioch police, to teach children how to behave. It starts at home! We can make excuses all we want, but these kids know how to act and behave themselves. And they need to be held accountable.

Whew Sep 18, 2014 - 7:08 pm

Call it what it is. Apples don’t fall far from the tree. Antioch is being terrorized by thugs. The lack of experienced police leadership, misuse of public funds, lack of attentive leadership, a city without auditing functions, and a continued neighborhood intolerance for citizen’s safety all contribute to the problem. Change the leadership direction and stomp-out the thugs. Day and night this neighborhood is harassed by people without respect for their neighbors. These kids and their parents have no respect for law enforcement or anyone else. Why do we continue to let the media look out for corporate interests? What about the people who pay for the police? McDonalds & Taco Bell get media attention — what about all good kids being slandered by the media? Are they criminals? These kids are our future – they need help. Let’s help them get to and from school safely. 50 kids in a school of thousands harass us and another 50 adults do too! Coddle these trouble makers — we all see the trouble everyday in Antioch. Fights in Walmart get attention as the city needs this sales tax revenue. Fighting is assault – a crime! What happens, no arrests, scared citizens, threats of lawsuits if stopped and no prosecution! Bad problem caused by a few bad people. Again bad people get attention – what happened to following the law? It’s not ok to cause trouble in Antioch! Get ready…….

Julia A. Dominguez Sep 18, 2014 - 7:56 pm

I grew up in Antioch and proud to be an AHS grad from 30 years ago. I was also very active in city and county politics. I now live in the Big Bear mountains, but my parents are still in Antioch and I worry about them in some of those areas. It does make me sad to see the problems in the city. I too have been in the parking lot several times and saw all of the kids gathering. My husband who grew up during the war in El Salvador and then in LA rushed my 10 year old nephew to the car after a movie in that parking lot when we saw a large gathered crowd. He can smell trouble. As do I from my police days. I hope this is addressed soon. What happened to the days when you would be suspended if you did something down the street from school? I know there is concern for property, but what about possible life loss?

Julio Sep 20, 2014 - 6:03 pm

We don’t suspend anymore. Remember a few years back the American Civil Liberties Union sued AUSD? Cost the city a lot and no more discipline. They are simply afraid of the ACLU. If we still had Mr. Isadore it would be great! Bless his heart, he paid his dues and got the heck out of town. Wish him all the best!

The answer is here, plain, simple, and clearly evident. The word of God speaks – There will be snide comments from those who do not believe, and for you, your future is clearly written as well…

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men. (‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭1-9‬ ESV)
