Antioch Set to Propose Requiring Garbage Services to Any Property Maintaining Water Service

The City of Antioch says it will be making a proposed amendment to the Antioch Municipal Code in January that will require those with water service to also have garbage and recycling services.

According to the Antioch City Manager Report, the Community Development Department will be presenting a proposed amendment to the Antioch Municipal Code on Jan 14, 2020, to improve compliance with the City’s requirement that all occupied structures subscribe to and maintain trash and recycling services.

Within the City of Antioch, all occupied homes and commercial/industrial properties must have trash and recycling services. The services are provided by Republic Services.

The Code Enforcement Division has received complaints of properties, primary residential, that do not maintain trash and recycling services. In these cases, the residents might either place their trash in the neighbor’s bins or commercial bins without permission or some cases, illegally dump their garbage elsewhere in the city.

According to the announcement, the proposed amendment would state that any property maintaining water is considered “occupied” and, as such, must maintain garbage an recycling service with Republic Services. Owners of those properties that currently have water services, but do not have garbage and recycling services will be notified and directed to subscribe to service or risk being issued a situation.  Tenants will not be cited, as it’s the responsibility of the owner to ensure services.

The city says there will be a process to allow exceptions to account for unique circumstances when water service may be provided without garbage service.

If you do not currently have garbage and recycling service, please contact Republic Services to subscribe at www.republicservices.com or call (925) 685-4711.

Only problem is Republic Services suck…I have to call at least once a month because the recycle driver doesn’t want to come into my court. Pure laziness. The garbage and yard waste drivers have no problem. Seems they do not hold their employees accountable for anything.

I’m surprised this wasn’t already a “thing”. What are people supposed to do, burn trash in their backyard? Load up their truck and take it to the dump? I think I know the easier option if it’s already loaded into a vehicle. You can find the answer over on Wilbur.

I live next to rental whose tenants have not had garbage services since they moved in – 5 years now. They pile it up around the property in large black garbage bags. Once every three months, the tenant hauls it …somewhere. There are more rats, mice, and squirrels trying to chew through the bags. One year, the tenant rented a large dumpster and left it out on the front drive driveway for 6 months. Yea, that smelled. The owner has been notified – by 3 times…and nothing changes. THE TENANT WORKS FOR THE CITY OF ANTIOCH IN THE SEWER DIVISION.!
