On Thursday, the Antioch Unified School District’s Board of Education announced the appointment of Stephanie Anello as Interim Superintend of the District.
According to a news release by the District, Anello has proudly served the District for 18-years first as a classroom teacher and, most recently, as the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services –a position she has held for the past five years. The Board is confident that Anello will maintain and build upon the momentum to make positive improvements to our District. The Board is committed to offering Anello the support she may need to serve the District in her new capacity.
Dr. Donald Gill was placed on paid administrative leave on Tuesday which prompted a special meeting of the school board where they voted unanimously 4-0 to place Dr. Gill on paid leave through June 30, 2016.
In September, Dr. Gill announced he would be resigning at the end of the school year saying he was moving onto other opportunities closer to his family. He also wanted to provide the District with enough time to find a replacement.
According to Jessica Romeo, Chief Human Resources Officer, she explained Friday morning that Dr. Gill will receive his base salary and health insurance coverage through June 30, 2016. If Dr. Gill earns any compensation from his work for any other employer, the amount he receives from the District will be offset by his earnings from another employer.
Romeo added that if Dr. Gill becomes eligible to receive health insurance coverage from another source that is equal to or better than the District’s coverage, he will release the District from any obligation to continue paying for his health insurance coverage.
Claire Smith, president of the board, stated that they have a timeline in place to find a permanent Superintendent and that Thursdays action neither speeds up or slows down the process.
“We have the process in place. Our dates are fixed for the choosing of the search firm. The replacement will depend on when the school year ends for the Superintendent we hire. Some districts end earlier in the calendar year than ours does,” said Smith. “We cold have someone in place as early as May, but more than likely the new person will start July 1.”
Anello will serve as Interim Superintendent until the Board hires a new superintend.
