Antioch School Board Appoints New Trustee

by ECT

On Wednesday Night, the Antioch Unified School Board appointed Fernando Navarro to fill an open seat after Barbara Cowan resigned on September 23.

The appointment came after the Board of Trustees reviewed 11 applicants and interviewed candidates Wednesday.

Navarro, who is self-employed, has two children in the District, both at Carmen Dragon Elementary School. He hopes to create more outreach and advocate for more parent participation.

Navarro beat out finalist Amalia Marroquin and Julie Young who advanced in the process after the Board of Trustees examined 11-applicants.

Navarro will be sworn in during the December 16 School Board meeting joining Claire Smith, Diane Gibson-Gray, Walter Ruehlig and Debra Vinson.

The list of applicants include:

  • Carleton Booker
  • Jayson Bordges
  • Gary Hack
  • Mark Jordon
  • Millard Larkin II
  • Amalia Marroquin
  • Joyann Motts
  • Fernando Navarro
  • Alicia Okoh
  • Ronald Partain
  • Julie Young

Applications of all candidates are available on the AUSD Website.

Navarro’s seat will be up for election in November 2016 along with Clair Smith and Diane-Gibson-Gray.

It’s obvious that they didn’t want prior School Board members and were looking for someone who would bring a different demographic to the Board.

Actually I think this is a good move. I would have liked to see Julie Young on the board but hopefully she will run one of these elections.
