by ECT

IMG_4404DavidDouglas

On Friday January 3 at approximately 6:45 PM, a 7-year-old girl was abducted from in front of her home in the 3800 block of Hummingbird Dr. The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had followed the victim and her mother to their residence from a nearby Walmart, kidnapping the young girl just after she arrived home. A description of the suspect and his vehicle was obtained and an Amber Alert was initiated.

Following up on leads, Investigators identified David Douglas as the suspect in this incident. Douglas’ vehicle was later located in the parking lot of the Antioch Marina by officers. Douglas was in the car with the victim at that time. Douglas was taken into custody and the victim was rescued without incident.

The victim had no apparent injuries and was reunited with her family. This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call Detective Joannides with the Antioch Police Department at (925)779-6931.

The Press Release above was issued at 3:45 am

Editors Notes:

  • The family was followed home and proceeded to take the young girl. The mother tried to stop him but he showed a rifle and took off.
  • Antioch PD did go house to house in the neighborhood where the incident occurred asking neighbors if they saw anything or had video cameras
  • David Douglas is suspected of an attempted abduction on Thursday at WalMart–the two families are not linked
  • The family and Mr. Douglas do not know each other.
  • The vehicle model description changed from a Honda to a Toyota Camry.
  • A tip from an incident on Thursday at Walmart helped lead to information of where Douglas may be.
  • Walmart was very helpful in reviewing video
  • A tip led Antioch PD to the marina where the girl was found. Contrary to multiple other media reports, police had already identified the vehicle off independent leads independent of a person who was located at the marina. Furthermore the person at the marina did not call PD or flag down an officer.

Amen to that

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 10:52 am

Yall dont kill people in California. Yall believe these animals will be cured. Thank God we left California for Texas. Sure we have our problems but we are also not afraid to put ours down for good. Yall deserve what u get for voting the liberals in time after time. And one last thing. This is why my wife amd I carry ccw everywhere we go. Thank God for Texas amd our political sensiblities for honoring the 2nd admendment.

Bob Jan 4, 2014 - 11:18 am

Good for you dude. They should call you a saint…

Aaron hill Jan 4, 2014 - 11:27 am

Your comment here is why people keep voting in the liberals. It’s heartless, politicized a horrible event that no one “deserves” to happen to them. Kids get abducted in Texas as well as California and it’s a tragedy wherever it’s done. Your hateful rant is the image people keep getting from conservatives and is why liberals keep winning.

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 1:33 pm

Never said the kid deserved anything. The dude sbould be put to death. Cali as a whole trys to help redeem em when they should just cut losses and remove from this world. Once again you get the govt and the policies u vote for.

Z Jan 4, 2014 - 2:03 pm

You know that Texas does not use the death penalty for kidnapping, right? So Texas vs. California, in this instance, makes zero sense.

tequilasheila Jan 4, 2014 - 10:33 pm

this whole conversation makes no sense….this is about a child being KIDNAPPED….not your stupid laws or politicians…geez

Jana Jan 5, 2014 - 11:02 am

Amen Jason!

TheHayley432 Jan 6, 2014 - 3:07 am

Well said Aaron Hill..

pam kruger Jan 7, 2014 - 11:40 am

i see nothing hateful in his remarks-he was stating facts-california is nothing but a bunch of libtards who care nothing about anything except for themselves-way to go texas-kill the scumbags-no one deserves to be taken against their will and subjected to god only knows what atrocities from these sick individuals., if a man cant act like a civilized human being then he needs to be put down like the rabid dog that he is.

Eli Jan 4, 2014 - 11:33 am

I agree with you to a certain extent. Death penalty for these low life’s for sure. You can’t speak for all Californians though. This happened just 15 minutes away. So you’re saying this little girl deserved what she got? Hope you don’t have children.

Jenny Jan 4, 2014 - 11:51 am

Not everyone in Ca votes for liberals. Children don’t deserve to be kidnaped because the state they live in has retarded politicians and lax laws on people who harm children. If someone shot another in Texas, I wouldn’t blame the laws, I’d blame the person with the weapon.

Angela Jan 4, 2014 - 12:33 pm

Jenny, I wish you would choose your words more wisely. I have a son who is special needs or as you would say “retarded” Please do not lump his challenges with the stupidity of many politicians. Please just call these politicians choices stupid. My son may be special needs but I can guarantee you he is not stupid.

Angela

sue Jan 4, 2014 - 1:54 pm

Well said. When people use the word “retarded” as Jenny did -, I no longer want to hear what they have to say.

deadheadtina63 Jan 4, 2014 - 2:04 pm

Nice, Angela…much love to your son!!

Ma beirne Jan 5, 2014 - 9:24 pm

Agreed, some people are just ignorant.

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 1:37 pm

I do have a three year old. My wife and I drill everyother month in different situations at our local gun range. Take away your God given right to defend oneself wirh arms and the bad guy almost won. The little girl didnt deserve this but bet my bottom dollar this guy does a streach with 3 square meals and a warm bed. Weekly group sessions to help work out his anger issues and is out im 3-5 years with good behavior.

Jana Jan 5, 2014 - 11:04 am

You are spot on! These criminals are pampered in prison and then released to commit another offense.

sue Jan 4, 2014 - 1:58 pm

Please use a thesaurus when looking for another word for stupid, you are being totally disrespectful to all children and adults with special needs.

Molly Jan 4, 2014 - 12:00 pm

glad you moved.

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 1:30 pm

Me too

Nancy Jan 4, 2014 - 12:16 pm

Your political jargon is stupid and not pertinent to the story. You just want to rant and rave about guns you cowboy hillbilly!

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 1:26 pm

I was replying about the post above of they should kill this guy. As for hillbilly, born amd raised in Clayton till about 10 years ago. Cowboy, yes. I turned pro for bullriding in 1997. And as for the guns rant ( an armed society is a polite society.

Jana Jan 5, 2014 - 11:07 am

It doesn’t do any good to argue with them. It wont change their minds…just let them continue to bury their heads in the sand. You are doing the right thing with your family. Protecting them when and if its needed!

Thumbgumby (@Thumbgumby) Jan 4, 2014 - 12:19 pm

All babies are human until they are born. Then they become targets of the fear addled populace. That is the republican mantra, scared shiiteless and hypocritical.

CSanch Jan 4, 2014 - 12:34 pm

Just so you know- Texas issued an Amber Alert for 2 girls in Texas yesterday as well. It is not limited to one state or one area. Your comment shows your ignorance. It has nothing to do with politics. It is unfortunate that there are terrible people that will harm children out there.

CaliforniaGirl Jan 4, 2014 - 2:04 pm

You should get a command of the English language. Based on your reply, you fit right in there in Po-dunk Texas.

CaliforniaGirl Jan 4, 2014 - 2:06 pm

I was replying to Jason Klein.

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 6:40 pm

Why for saying fixin and yall? How bout dude and hella. Better?

Nicole Jan 4, 2014 - 3:08 pm

This is Antioch Illinois not California

Eli Jan 4, 2014 - 3:26 pm

This happened 15 minutes away…. In California.

Linda Jan 4, 2014 - 3:34 pm

Antioch, California

EastCountyToday Jan 4, 2014 - 4:22 pm

@nicole…. this incident and website focuses on East Contra Costa County in California. The Antioch we are talking about is in California

Nicole Jan 4, 2014 - 3:16 pm

Yall can’t read either. This is Antioch Illinois, not California.

madchemist24 Jan 4, 2014 - 4:02 pm

apparently, you are the one who cannot read …. it was Antioch California

All you had to look at was this line:
Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call Detective Joannides with the Antioch Police Department at (925)779-6931.

925 is NOT an Illinois area code. Google it … it will come up with:
http://www.ci.antioch.ca.us/citygov/police/phonelist.htm

madchemist24 Jan 4, 2014 - 4:07 pm

nevermind the fact that antioch illinois is under 2 feet of snow and you still see grass in the attached pictures.

Tamara Jan 4, 2014 - 4:11 pm

No, Nicole, this is Antioch, California. You need to look at the article again. East County is Antioch, Ca. The address on Hummingbird is Antioch, Ca. The marina is Antioch Ca, and the phone number to call the detective is a California area code. As much as we hate to have anything like this happen to any child, anywhere, there are sick people out there. It is our job to protect our children the best way we can. It’s sad that life in prison is not always true. There should be NO offer of parole, EVER.

Maureen Torres Jan 4, 2014 - 10:08 pm

C A L I F O R N I A !!!! Anioch, California.

Mike W Jan 4, 2014 - 3:33 pm

Not all Californians think the same Jason K. Im a Californian and also Gun owner who served in the Marines. Since you say you left CA, you wussed out and decided to flee instead of fight these stupid gun laws.

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 6:39 pm

Didnt wuss out just decided I wanted to keep more of MY hard earned money. Plus pro rodeo has bigger added $ for our rodeos. Not a big deal. Big gamble paid off for us. Keep fighting the good fight devil dog. Semper fi.

Spencer Jan 5, 2014 - 11:14 am

Jason Klein, so you’re a Marine too? If you studied up on “Yall hystery” you’d recall the 2nd Amendment is provided by our Constitution, not by God. God didn’t create “Yall States of Merica”, our Founding Fathers did. Your understanding of your right to bear arms is insulting to the blood, sweat, and tears over generations that went in to making this great country.

Diane Lowery Jan 4, 2014 - 10:03 pm

People on Death row, die from natural causes before exhausting their legal rights. To say that this little girl deserves what she gets is sick. Y’all folks in Texas, can keep Jason Klein!

Jason Klein Jan 4, 2014 - 10:53 pm

Go reread my posts I never said the kidnapped one deserved anything. I posted in response to someone saying to kill the perp. Yall dont kill anyone in California. Try and rehab amd fix the unfixables due to the liberal train of thought. This guy will be out soon enough. U reap what u sow when u reelected reps who dont want to punish but feel that the perps are victims and need to be helped instead of cast out of society. When he gets “the help he needs” is ready to be reintroduced back into society ( sooner then later) u got what u deserved. The liberal utopia of California is never going to work.

Deborah K. Jan 5, 2014 - 5:24 am

Jason just because someone lives in a certain state that doesn’t have the death penalty or other related laws DOES NOT mean that they agree with all laws of said state and doesn’t even mean they voted for such laws. Not all people are as fortunate as you and your wife and maybe do not have the means to pick up and move to another state, however, I personally believe they should take the guy and hang him by his “B__LS” until he bleeds to death and I happen to live in the God forsaken state of California. I would be thankful to you if the next time you make a comment of this nature to do it directed at the person at fault and not your fellow mankind that may possibly share your same beliefs. Thank You, Deborah K.

Gerry Cox Jan 5, 2014 - 8:39 am

We’re glad you left California, too!!!

lynn sebourn Jan 5, 2014 - 9:08 am

I agree with you fulheartedly..

angie Jan 5, 2014 - 11:40 am

this was in tennessee, not california\

angie Jan 5, 2014 - 11:49 am

ok, i was wrong, not tn. my friend from tn posted it, and i assumed it was antioch tn. geesh it would be helpful if the article had included the state, she said with egg on her face.

Nicole Klein Jan 5, 2014 - 8:54 pm

This has nothing to do with what you said… I just think it’s neat that we have the same last name

Glen Jan 4, 2014 - 11:03 am

I don’t know if it would have helped, but at the store, if someone’s actions begin to mirror your own, seek out store security. (They appear to be watching you, they’re staying in the same aisle, etc.) Don’t be embarrassed. On the way home, if you sense that a vehicle is following, make at least two left turns. If the vehicle is still following, that’s beyond coincidence. Don’t lead them to your house. Drive to a fire or police station and lay on the horn until help appears. Again, don’t be embarrassed to make a fuss. Maybe it’s nothing, maybe it’s something like this.

I don’t know anything about this case, but I’d be willing to bet this guy was out on probation. That’s something we all need to have a serious discussion about, if true.

Kathy Murphy Jan 6, 2014 - 4:54 pm

And being on probation MEANS everyone is abducting children??????

Margarita G Carreon-Wilson Jan 4, 2014 - 11:07 am

What bothers me is that this animal was involved in an attempted abduction on Thursday and the public was not informed. From my understanding this occurred at Walmart also.

Ida Anderson Jan 4, 2014 - 12:24 pm

Yes, I agree. Why was Thursdays attempt NOT mentioned to the public??

Linda Jan 4, 2014 - 3:37 pm

Walmart did not report it to APD.

Dana O Jan 4, 2014 - 11:14 am

Thank you for this page. I truly believe that social media, primarily this page, helped get the info circulated locally and widely so more people were on the lookout. We may have to put up with some racial, unkind remarks but overall, this page is top notch. Way more info here than all the news and paper sites combined. Thanks again!!!

Eli Jan 4, 2014 - 11:34 am

Praise God she was found and let that low life scum bag get his.

Richard Asadoorian Jan 4, 2014 - 11:36 am

I feel that the APD did a great job and kudos to Walmart and the lady who spotted the car at the marina. In April, when money from Measure “C” starts rolling in and we swell the ranks of APD-you will see an even greater police presence and a safer Antioch.

Linda Jan 4, 2014 - 11:39 am

Margarita, Walmart did not inform the APD of the attempted abductions.

D Jan 4, 2014 - 11:39 am

Looking at his facebook page, he’s a former Marine, and an active father of a young boy.

M. Hill Jan 4, 2014 - 11:54 am

Now I know why the Antioch police are so highly regarded by a friend of mine!! They do their job and they are good at it! Thank you APD for finding that little girl and getting her away from that animal so quickly without incident!!

m.h. Jan 4, 2014 - 12:30 pm

And no official report of the woman who alerted police to her. How sad. She deserves credit.

So happy she was found safe!

Eli Jan 4, 2014 - 3:06 pm

She did get credit. LaShay Burks. God bless her and her quick actions.

Truth Jan 4, 2014 - 3:42 pm

She did not alert police. She just sought the media spotlight afterwards.

EastCountyToday Jan 4, 2014 - 4:24 pm

@m.h.

We issued an update to the incident on what occurred at the marina.

A tip led Antioch PD to the marina where the girl was found. Contrary to multiple other media reports, police had already identified the vehicle off independent leads independent of a person who was located at the marina. Furthermore the person at the marina did not call PD or flag down an officer.

Truth Jan 4, 2014 - 5:09 pm

The ONLY media outlet who took the time to research the facts. Btavo!

David A. Dumb Jan 4, 2014 - 12:48 pm

Great job APD. Police in Antioch are really doing a great work. Hats off to you.

ECVsBrother Jan 4, 2014 - 4:27 pm

The good news is your ECT is being read all over America! Good site.

Jan LEASURE Jan 4, 2014 - 4:56 pm

Thank God

danielle Jan 4, 2014 - 5:43 pm

Thank God the child was found unharmed! How horrible it would be to come home get out of your vehicle and have an armed individual abduct your child… and if any of you are offended because I used the word God, too bad. You people should try to stick to the issue at hand instead of being over sensitive to certain words being used. If somebody uses a particular insensitive word like retard, obviously they are the ones that lack intelligence and have minimal diction capabilities Don’t scold them because they were not raised properly, instead pity them for their foolishness. I too have twins both with special needs and could care less what others say. Again it is very good to hear this child is safe!.

For why Jan 4, 2014 - 6:08 pm

Geez people, are you for real !! A little girl was kidnapped and rescued by local law enforcement and you are all on a rampage about Texas, use of words etc. get a fn life would you, relax, no wonder this area is so F’d up, just listen to your selves. Be thankful the little girl is ok and home!!! Take a chill pill.

Deb Jan 4, 2014 - 6:51 pm

I could not agree more with ” For why” comments. Damn people these are your thoughts – really. I thank God she was found and pray for this family to recover from this. Anyone dare find a supportive comment to bring this family peace. Why can’t people in or from this town come together and offer support and encouragement.

Jim Jan 4, 2014 - 6:42 pm

Makes me sick.
A little girl is kidnapped.
The police rescued her.

And some idiots have to use this kind of incident to further their political agenda?
I hate the world if this is the way we act.

marion chatwood Jan 4, 2014 - 7:31 pm

way to gooooo !!!

Tia Jan 4, 2014 - 8:21 pm

So sad people are so cruel in this world!!! Thank GOD she was found safe!! Prayers to the families!!!

Daisy Jan 4, 2014 - 9:20 pm

Thank God she was found and is alive. That’s what counts

linda Jan 4, 2014 - 9:35 pm

thank the lord she was unharmed and returned to her family. as for the maggot castrate the sob lock him up

Nicole Jan 5, 2014 - 12:11 am

yes ma’am! he deserves every bit of it!

Lisa Jan 4, 2014 - 11:09 pm

Thank God she is physically unharmed but mentally it will haunt her the rest of her life, she always remember it. I was 12 when I was almost abducted from my front yard, that was 36 years ago and I remember that day like it was yesterday. I remember the couple, their car, and the weather that day. I never said a word to my parents and kept that inside for many years. I cry and get sick when I hear about things like this. Lets concentrate on the victim and the parents and teach our children to be aware.

Nicole Jan 5, 2014 - 12:10 am

Job well done PD! creeps are everywhere!!!

invisiblebubbles Jan 5, 2014 - 3:31 am

Thank u Antioch PD. Good guys win this time. Put him under the jail and dont ever let him out.

Nicholas Jan 5, 2014 - 7:26 am

I think when the cop finds the guy he should be in there for the rest of his life

gina Jan 5, 2014 - 9:03 am

Its good the cops have apprehended him. However, there is a possibly that this guy was going to sell this girl into slavery. The marina could be the exchange point where the transactions take place. The cops shouldnt stop just arresting him they should investigate the area of the marina where this kidnapper was waiting chances are this could be a transaction area for other kidnappers.

Cathy Jan 5, 2014 - 10:19 am

First I would like to say congratulations to the Antioch PD.

People should understand the timing of information being put out hinges on a couple things.

For example apparently some of these “attempts” may not have been considered attempts until after the successful kidnapping and that is why they may not have been reported. I am sure Walmart or Target see stupid stuff all day which could be interpreted in many ways. The fact that Walmart (and Target if what I have been reading is true) were paying close enough attention to put it all together is a good thing and surely helped in the investigation.

Initially, I was annoyed that the Amber alert came out late and that the suspect wasn’t identified right away but after speaking to people that have first hand experience in law enforcement I learned the following: The police may have not wanted to scare the suspect in to hiding more by announcing his name and such – which in this case may have helped as he didn’t go far. The police didn’t want the public to interfere in the investigation possibly since they had good leads. There may be other reasons that may or may not come out as this investigation goes forward but in the end the outcome was better than I expected given the violent and bold way it all started.

Now, I have to say it really is bizarre how stupid people are and the risks they take online. I read the posts that people put on Facebook. One woman put something inflammatory and when I opened up her facebook page she had a picture of her grand daughter naked in the bathtub! Hello!? Bad folks read Facebook too! Please put privacy settings on your pages to prevent people from knowing more about you then you want to.

Finally, about this young lady “hero”. How would she recognize an undercover cop? Undercover cars are not unmarked police cars necessarily. I suspect that the APD was there and she didn’t know until the whole thing went down. I think she got caught up in the limelight and now is regretting it since her story is being dissected. I think we should leave her alone. Those of you getting all on that race card are just taking the victim mentality to a whole new level that in the end just keeps you from getting any further. A Bull shi__er will be called out no matter what his/ her color. If you sit back and listen and THINK about the facts and debate the facts you may get a lot further. I am just glad whatever her involvement was that she didn’t get in the way and make this come to a violent end.

And lastly I have seen it mentioned quite a few times but I thought it was amazing how powerful social media is. This site seemed to be the first to make the announcements of developments before everyone so I think the reporters on this site must know what they are doing and be commended for doing such a great job of reporting on this story. If you go to this site’s Facebook page and compare it to the other news sites you will see ECT’s stories got shared WAY more than any other sites. I think the missing little girls picture was shared over 2000 times in less than a few hours that night. We need to all work together and not tolerate the political folks that want to turn ANYTHING in to an opportunity to stand on their soapbox, the racists and the victim mentality reverse racists, people that randomly throw out conspiracy crap, and the thugs that want to make a name for themselves.

Congratulation Antioch PD and the City of Antioch- you did this right. My prayers go out to all involved particularly the innocent little lady that will have to come to terms with whatever she experienced.

Syara Jan 5, 2014 - 3:01 pm

Nice Job Amber alert!

Sandra Jan 5, 2014 - 8:02 pm

Im so glad she was found. ..and well said jason Klein I couldn’t agree more I live in cali and This state SUCKS when it comes to pedophiles. I wish they would just kill them all. There’s no fixing these sick Fucks smh he will be free in 4-5yrs and will hurt someone else’s child so sad.

Cheryl Wjiteaker Jan 5, 2014 - 8:53 pm

I hate perverted.

Hannah Jan 5, 2014 - 9:41 pm

Can we just shut up about politics? What does that have to do with anything? Just be happy the girl is found. Good god.

shari Jan 5, 2014 - 11:15 pm

Thanking God that this little girl was returned and that this man was caught…

Johnathon Michler Jan 6, 2014 - 11:38 am

This sounds like human trafficking. It is becoming a more common thing every day and a very serious matter. In other countries where there is less servilance the childern are taken to other countries and used as sex slaves. Even as far north in WI there has been attempts at abducting kids for this trade. One person shaved the head of a little girl and used a injected drugs in to her to make her sleep. She walked out the restroom pass the mother without her recognizing at first but luckly for her she was recovered.

annie Jan 6, 2014 - 2:58 pm

Hooooooray! Glad to know this child was rescued, unharmed and back home. People, please be aware of your surroundings.

Cheryl linn Jan 6, 2014 - 5:36 pm

Thank god for her safe return ! Thank you to all police and fellow helpers !!!!

skeetownfilms Jan 6, 2014 - 9:29 pm

Don’t read the comments. Just be grateful she was found and hope and/or pray that justice is properly served.
