Antioch Police Arrest Driver Who Killed 12-Year-Old on Sycamore Drive, Injured 2 Others

ANTIOCH, CA — On October 11, 29-year-old Ray Shaqil Reeves was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facilityfor vehicular manslaughter and 5 charges of assault with deadly weapon.

The charges stem from a Sept. 16 crash on Sycamore Drive where at 3:21 pm, Antioch Police and Contra Costa COunty Fire Protection District responded to a vehicle crash which resulted in three 12-year-old’s being struck by a vehicle.

All three were airlifted to area hospitals. 12-Year-Old Gianathon was taken off life support back on October 1 while two other teens are still recovering with multiple injuries.

According to police, Reeves was arrested for the following violations of the following California Penal Code Sections:

  • PC 192 (c)(1)-Vehicular Manslaughter,
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon

In a statement, Antioch Police said, ” Thank you to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for hearing this case and filing charges against Reeves. We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the children and pray for the family and loved ones during this time of grief. Words fall short of expressing our sorrow for the victims of this extremely tragic incident”

Yesterday, Antioch Police Department issued a press release on the arrest of Ray Shaqil Reeves. Reeves, a 29-year-old resident of Antioch, will be arraigned today in Martinez at 1:30 pm in front of Judge Nancy Davis Stark.

On October 11th, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed a vehicular manslaughter charge, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two special allegations for brain injury, paralysis, and great bodily harm against Reeves.

A total of six victims were harmed by Mr. Reeves’s actions on September 16th — four of whom are children. One child died from injuries caused by Reeves speeding through a residential neighborhood, colliding with another vehicle, and then hitting three children on a sidewalk as they were walking home from school.

The DA’s Office thanks Antioch Police for their thorough work in investigating this case. We also express our sympathies to the victims and condolences to the family who lost a loved one in this heartbreaking incident.

His charges stem from a crash that occurred on September 16, 2022 when Reeves was speeding through a residential neighborhood. He collided with a vehicle making a left turn at an intersection, and ended up driving on a sidewalk, hitting three middle school children who were walking home. All three minors are from a blended family and one died as a result of the crash. The two other minors are recovering from their physical injuries.

Updated: 3 Children Airlifted After Vehicle Crash on Sycamore Drive in Antioch

At 3:21 pm on Sept. 16, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a vehicle crash at Sycamore and Manzanita in the City of Antioch.

It was reported that a vehicle crashed into a house injuring 5 patients, including 4 pediatric children. Antioch Police Department officers responded and blocked off the roadway.

A total of 4 AMR units were requested to the scene along with 3 medical helicopters for the pediatric patients.

According to preliminary information, two vehicles were traveling on Sycamore when one vehicle tried to go around another vehicle causing a t-bone style crash which sent a car onto the sidewalk which struck three children and sending the vehicle into a house.

Contra Costa County Fire stated that three 12-year-olds were injured, a 9-year-old was injured and a 21-year-old were injured.

Antioch Police Update

ANTIOCH, CA. On 9/16/2022, at approximately 3:20 PM, Antioch Police Department Dispatch began to receive numerous reports of a major injury collision in which three juvenile pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Witnesses stated that a red Chevrolet Impala struck a tan Mercury Mystique in the area of Sycamore Drive and Manzanita Way, forcing the Impala in the direction of the juveniles walking on the southwest corner of Sycamore Drive and Manzanita way.
At approximately 3:23 PM, Antioch Officers arrived at the scene of the collision and located two of the juveniles who were in critical condition. Officers immediately began life-saving measures when the third juvenile was located several feet away. With the assistance of Medical Emergency Services, all three juveniles were given medical attention at the scene and ultimately life-flighted to local area hospitals to receive additional medical care. Additionally, the driver of the Mystique was transported to a local area hospital as a precaution. In contrast, the driver of the Impala was also life-flighted to a local hospital for serious injuries sustained during the collision.
According to witness statements, the Mercury Mystique was traveling westbound on Sycamore Drive and was waiting for traffic to clear before turning left (southbound) onto Manzanita Way. Simultaneously, the Chevrolet Impala exited Sycamore Square onto westbound Sycamore Drive at a high rate of speed. As the Impala approached the Mercury, the Impala attempted to pass the Mercury on the left just as the Mercury began to make the left-hand turn. Regrettably, the result was the Impala colliding into the Mercury, propelling the Impala in the direction of the juveniles reportedly walking home from school.
We offer our deepest condolences to the families of this tragic and unfortunate incident and pray for a speedy recovery for all the involved parties. Additionally, we would like to thank all the community members and first responders who assisted as this event unfolded.

My mother live on in that area I’ve seen these people drive up and down those streets over a hundred miles an hour every single day standing around loitering not doing anything but hanging out and driving fast I knew this was going to happen sooner or later
