Antioch: Onlookers Pull Elderly Man Out of Canal After Vehicle Crash

by ECT

At 1:30 pm Wednesday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle off the roadway and into the canal off James Donlon Road in Antioch.

Firefighter arrived on scene to find an elderly male who had crashed his car into the canal and was out of his vehicle. He was transported by AMR to a local hospital.

According to Robert Marshall, CONFIRE, spokesman, the incident was over within 30-minutes as crews stood by as a tow truck pulled the vehicle out of the canal.

On our Facebook Page, several people stated onlookers jumped into action and helped pull the elderly man from the canal after he fell asleep at the wheel.

We were not on scene for this incident, but here are comments from our Facebook Page:

Sean van Blackfield He is being taken to the hospital as a precaution. He should be fine. He told me he was complaining of some chest pain and when I pulled him out he had a bloody nose and a broken wrist. But that was pretty good for the speed at which he hit the bridge

Sam Bergerhouse it feels pretty good to be apart of helping save a mans life. I’m glad that all of us could come together and help this man. ill admit i was a little scared as to how to help him but glad we did it!

Carol Brisbon Crump My husband is the man in the light blue shirt that supplied the strap to hold on to him. He’s a Sergeant for Concord PD. Didn’t even tell me he helped til our son told me. He said it was just “what he does.” Smh

Sean van Blackfield Carol Brisbon Crump tell him thank you for me. He was a huge help in getting the older gentleman out. I’m glad we were all there in time to save him. It was a great day to save a life and go swimming at the same time. I hope your family has a good night
