FAQ on How We Rank the Top 100 Most Dangerous Cities

What this research list reveals. Our research reveals the 100 most dangerous cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Violent crimes include homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Data used for this research are 1) the number of violent crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and 2) the population of each city.

Why NeighborhoodScout’s analysis is more comprehensive than others. Thousands of cities nationwide – both large and small – have multiple agencies with law enforcement responsibility. These include municipal police, county sheriff, transit police, campus police, public school police, park and port police, tribal police, and more. Since many cities are served by more than one law enforcement agency, our exclusive analysis includes crimes reported by all agencies. We accomplish this by collecting raw crime data from all 17,000 law enforcement agencies in America. Then we use a relational database built from the ground up to assign reported crimes from each agency to the city where it has law enforcement responsibility. This method provides an accurate representation of the complete number and types of crimes that truly occur within any city or town, not just crimes reported by a single municipal agency.

We do this same process for every city in the United States, due to the agency-centric way that crimes are reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, rather than reporting crime in a location-centric way.  That is, our analysis is not to find the agencies who report the most violent crimes, but rather the cities which have the highest rates of violent crime in their cities, as reported by all of the agencies with law enforcement responsibility in the city or town.

Once we have this complete and accurate count of crimes for every city in the nation, our analysis takes the violent crimes for each city with 25,000 or more people, and divides them by the population of the city, divided by 1,000.  This establishes a violent crime rate per 1,000 population that is used to compare every city.

Where we get our data and its time frame.

City population data we use are the latest available directly from the US Bureau of the Census at the time of this analysis (2012).

Crime data we use are the most recent data the FBI classifies as ‘Final, non-preliminary.’  It is the most up-to-date and fully vetted data with complete national coverage that is available.  We insist on using Final, Non-Preliminary data for our analyses and analytics, rather than basing our research on preliminary data that may need to be updated or have errors in it.  For this research report, it is the 2012 year total data, released in Final, Non-Preliminary form in November, 2013.  At the time of this report, the 2013 year total crime data is not complete.  The FBI is still working through data issues and reporting issues before that data can be considered Final, and Non-Preliminary.  We use the latest Final, Non-Preliminary data for our analysis to assure the best quality information and to treat every city equally.  The 2013 data will be considered Final, Non-Preliminary sometime in the fall of 2014. When it is, we will re-run our analytics and our analysis, and produce a new updated ranking list.  Until then, what we are using is the most recent Final Data with complete national coverage as per the FBI.

Even though my friends in Pittsburg will probably laugh at me, I feel pretty good living in Antioch.

been here for a long time Dec 31, 2013 - 7:40 am

It must be pretty bad in the top 8 for Oakland to be ranked at 9.

Richard, I agree. When I was fortunate enough to write the ‘Around Antioch’ community column for the East County Times (2005-2011), I always tried to counter negative perceptions of Antioch with the good people & events.

After 45 years I still love Antioch. The only problem I have with this lovely city is three of the current council members.

This looks as if the methodology was solid. . .it’s an important thing to consider: “This method provides an accurate representation of the complete number and types of crimes that truly occur within any city or town, not just crimes reported by a single municipal agency.”

I agree that there are some wonderful people in Antioch. The good things should be recognized and appreciated. However, I think it’s absolutely necessary to be completely realistic about the criminal activity. It’s vital for anyone who is considering living, working, or investing here to acquaint themselves with the facts. It’s just not fair to allow anyone to be misled about this.

Being positive and optimistic can be a wonderful thing. Looking on the bright side is a great personal habit — but some of the very real circumstances that we live with here should be talked about honestly and openly.

I wonder if we try real hard we can make it in the top ten like Oakland and Richmond. This is such a sad day for Antioch. I hope we can get it down a few hundred instead of up. We have such a nice waterfront and downtown that is way below it’s potential.

I’m going to say something that will shock a lot of you blind, ignoramus, delusional people:

Anyone want to know why the top 5 are the most dangerous cities in America? Does anyone have even the slightest clue?? Well, here it is, which by the way is a very simple answer:

Saginaw, MI 45% Black population
West Memphis, AR 62% Black population
Camden, NJ 43% Black population
Flint, MI 56% Black population
East St. Louis, 96% Black population

Guess what? Antioch is reaching these levels of Black demographics. And if any of your blind, ignoramus, delusional people have some ridiculous rebuttal, answer this question.. Give me one city in the Bay Area with a Black population of over 15% that has low crime. Give me one…just one.

Anybody?

And for the rest of the delusional demos and libtards, you can find the FACT stated above through a very solid statistical website:

Name calling while stoking racial tensions.

Not a flattering combo, Bud.

You got any solutions or are you just gonna stand pat on the race baiting posts?

Kelly Jan 3, 2014 - 4:15 am

I agree 100%

Reginald Jamal Brown Jan 3, 2014 - 1:10 pm

Yawn… that’s one way morons who can’t handle the truth like to argue. Deflect the fact into something that has nothing to do the with problem.

Yes it is RACIAL there is no arguing about it. Blind, ignoramus, delusional…

karl dietzel Jan 1, 2014 - 8:54 pm

and our city council is doing absolutely nothing, nothing, and NOTHING. they are still NOT hiring the 18 authorized and funded officers positions, just a bunch of excuses over excuses “can’t find any qualified applicants” what a shame.
but with the latest murder from dec. 31, we may are at position 90?

Richard Asadoorian Jan 3, 2014 - 10:40 am

Laying all the ills of a city at the feet of one ethnic group is a deplorable racial commentary. Also, laying all the blame on the police isn’t fair.
The true root cause is the decline of the family unit and its control over its own home environment.

Reginald Jamal Brown Jan 3, 2014 - 1:11 pm

yeah that’s definitely it… the decline of the family unit. Give me a freak’n break.

Julio Jan 3, 2014 - 7:45 pm

I have to agree with Mr. Asadoorian on this one which is rare. ONE of the problems here as well as this entire country is the decline of the family unit. Goes back to the federal government giving entitlements that create a situation where no one has to take responsibility for any thing or work. That covers all ethnic groups.

ECV Jan 3, 2014 - 10:17 pm

Julio,

I also agree. We are seeing a decline all across the board. It is my hope that in time, the pendulum will swing back the other way. If not, we are all screwed.

Reginald Jamal Brown Jan 5, 2014 - 4:31 pm

You know in college there are several classes on issues facing Blacks in today’s society.

There is an abnormally high percentage of broken homes / families, and not surprisingly they are Black families.

I would know. I have a Masters in Political Science with a minor in Ethnic Studies.

Yes.. part of what you’re are saying does involve the lack of a father figure in these Black broken families. Ergo, one of the particular reasons why Black female ethnicities have the hardest time raising a family due to the burden of providing to all in the family.

All you did was prove a point that Blacks have more broken families per capita, or percentage wise.

More Black families = more crime in ANY CITY. Also, like you said, more broken families in that city.

I still have not heard any one of you provide one city .. just one city in the entire Bay Area that has more than a 15% population of Blacks with low crime.

Like I said… hypocritical. Now we can say scared cowards to who can’t speak or handle the truth.

TrueWarriorFAN Jan 4, 2014 - 4:28 am

I can’t comment on the other cities since I have zero info on demographics, etc.

I can say one thing about Antioch, since I am from the East Bay city of nearby Concord. CRYSTAL METH.

LetsthrowoutAntiochGargbage. Jan 4, 2014 - 8:05 am

Looks like Antioch may need some Vigilantes to protect the neighborhoods, that is until APD can beef up their police force. Also, we need to work together and get more cameras up, guard dogs, and be armed. Any responsible citizen can get a gun to protect themselves in their homes. I’m a single Antioch female resident that has lived here all my life, I live alone, and have experienced the crime on my street, Im 30 years of age and not about to let these thugs take over. Come through my door your goin down, touch my car, I release my beast and then I come after you.

I fully agree that the section 8 housing in our town has caused the increase in crime, Ive lived here since the 1980s and it was NEVER like this. Get rid of Section 8 and Get rid of the Thugs!

Reginald Jamal Brown Jan 5, 2014 - 4:22 pm

Finally… someone that makes sense.

Reginald Jamal Brown Jan 5, 2014 - 4:45 pm

There are several college classes that deal with issues facing Blacks in today’s society. I would know because I have attended several. I have a Master’s degree in Political Science and a minor in ethnic studies.

There is some truth to the fact that broken families are the cause of most crime in a city. The underlying truth to that derives from demographics of the city. Additionally, there is an alarming amount of broken Black families compared to all other ethnicities in America. A lot of it has to do with the fact that most Black men will not support and or stay with a pregnant Black woman. Ergo, Black women have the most difficult time in life being burdened with the responsibility of solely taking care of the family.

All the people who disagree with my posts only proved the above fact. Most broken families are from the African American ethnicity.

Furthermore, no one has provided an answer to a simple question. Give me one city in the ENTIRE Bay Area with more than a 15% Black population with no crime. ANYONE? yeah.. exactly.

More Blacks in a city = More crime = More broken Black families = more graffiti = more rape= more murders… and so forth.

Like I said, hypocritical, delusional, blind, ignormaus people. Now we can add scared, cowards, and dimwits.

Look at the top three cities in Contra Costa with a very high quality of life and excellent schools. Orinda, Lafayette, San Ramon and so forth. GUESS WHAT DEMOGRAPHICS ARE IN THAT CITY.?? Guess how very little broken homes are there??
