Antioch: Man Drowns During Church Fishing Trip

Shortly after 10:00 am Sunday, authorities responded to a report of a drowning in the area of the  DOW Wetlands near the Antioch Marina where a 52-year-old Oakland man died.

According to police, a man was on a fishing trip with his church for father’s day when his line got tangled in the water. He took off his clothes and entered the water. He apparently slipped and went into the water and did not come back up after sustaining injuries to his head from hitting the rocks— friends entered the water to pull him back up and began CPR.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was dispatched to the call at roughly 10:13 am and arrived on scene at the Marina where they walked more than a mile to the location where the man had been fishing—nearly 15-20 minutes. They arrived to the fisherman prior to Police and Contra Costa County Marine Patrol and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The body of the man was then transported by Sheriffs boat to the Antioch Marina where the Coroner was waiting. He was the transported.

The name has not yet been released

Correction: The originally identified the man as a 50-year-old, according to police, the man was 52.
