K-9 Thor, Antioch Police Department
Born: Dec 14, 2000
End of watch: Dec 30, 2014
We have lost an iconic police dog who spent a decade serving his community, saving the lives of officers & taking some of the toughest felons off the streets. K9 Thor was partner to Officer Matthew Harger & they made a formidable team. K9 Thor was given the Purple Heart Award for bravery after he was shot by a parolee suspect during a burglary investigation.
According to Ofc Harger, “Even though Thor was injured, he immediately engaged the suspect and held onto him without letting go during a continued gunfight until I and another officer were able to neutralize the threat. “This is the utmost demand for a police dog, and that night, without a doubt, Thor saved our lives. There is no other story that can top that.”
During his long career K9 Thor was responsible for hundreds of arrests & suspect surrenders, dozens of narcotic finds and over 40 apprehensions of suspects who refused to give up. He received a special commendation for locating a suicidal 14 year old yr old runaway that has slashed his wrists – K-9 Thor executed an arduous mile and a half track to find the boy in time to save his life.
K-9 Thor was truly an amazing K9 with 9 lives & a lot of heart: while on duty he was run over on Hwy 4 while attempting to apprehend a suspect that was just involved in a shooting, he was shot in the chest by a parolee burglary suspect & was run over while in the middle of physically apprehending a car thief who had fled. Through it all Thor never gave up!
Thor, a Belgian Malinois, was purchased by Ofc Harger & brought home to his family when he was just 7 weeks old. He went into service with the Antioch Police Dept in Sept of 2002 and retired in Dec of 2012 after serving a distinguished 10 years.
When off-duty and during retirement, K9 Thor was a valued member of their family. Please join us in sending your thoughts and prayers to Officer Harger, his family & the Antioch PD K9 Unit on the loss of K-9 Thor…a truly epic working dog.

Thor was a wonderful Police Dog. He was a joy to see, if you were a honest citizen, and the last thing you wanted to see if you were a criminal. Thor served Antioch well and will be remembered by those of us who appreciated what he and Officer Harger did for Antioch.
RIP For a true hero!
RIP Thor!
