Just after 9:00 pm Sunday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a vehicle crash on westbound Highway 4 near Hillcrest in Antioch.
Upon arrival, firefighters reported this as a solo vehicle crash with possible extrication with an occupant trapped and that this was possibly a fatality.
At least two lanes of traffic were blocked as of 9:20 pm and this was confirmed a fatality according to the CHP Log.
UPDATE PER CHP
This evening at 9:00pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a solo vehicle crash on Hwy-4 westbound, west of SR-160. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, it was determined that a silver Chevrolet Impala had been driven off the roadway of westbound Hwy-4, into the metal guardrail, and then subsequently catapulted into a metal sign pole. The Chevrolet sustained major intrusion damage to the driver side.
Tragically the driver (41yr old male from Antioch and sole occupant) sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel on the scene. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of his identity.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision but it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
