Antioch: Crews Able to Contain Radioactive Materials Spill

At 9:02 am Thursday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to the Twin Creek Apartment Complex in Antioch for a report of a exposure of radioactive material.

The incident occurred at the intersection at James Donlon and Contra Loma Blvd in Antioch which closed several streets as crews worked. Firefighters immediately evacuated as many as 40 residents nearby within the apartment complex and by noon the evacuation was lifted.

According to Contra Costa Fire spokesperson Robert Marshall, a construction crew working had damaged a piece of construction equipment that contained radioactive material within it that was exposed to the environment.

Marshall said that the materials were Americium and Cesium. The final isolation area was about 30’ diameter around the area, but was cleaned up rather quickly. There was no environmental contamination.

The units on scene included Contra Costa County Fire , Antioch Police, Contra Costa County HazMat, AMR, the Water District, and Pacific Gas & Electric Representatives.

By 12:45 pm, Contra Costa Fire reported the incident was closed with no outside contamination and all units were being cleared. All roadways were now open.
