Antioch City Council Could See $659 Per Month Pay Increase

by ECT

At the August 27 Antioch City Council meeting, the council will discuss their salaries and they could see a bump in pay after the next election.

Currently, each council member makes $941.20 per month which has not seen an increase in pay since 2006.

By state law, the council can give themselves a 5% increase for each year since 2006. If they opt for that, it would come out to $1,600.04 per month effective January 1, 2021 when a new council is seated. The council does have the option to take less.

No other benefits or stipends were included in the report. There was also no salary survey of other neighboring city council pay included.

With Antioch moving to District elections in 2020, all members of the council (Joy Motts, Lori Ogorchock, Lamar Thorpe, Monica Wilson) are up for election along with Mayor Sean Wright.

Here is a look at other local city council pay:

  • $1,600 – City of Antioch (Proposed)
  • $1,402 – City of Richmond
  • $1,352 – City of Concord
  • $939 – City of Brentwood
  • $938 – City of San Ramon
  • $650 – City of Walnut Creek
  • $585 – City of Martinez
  • $500 – City of Pittsburg
  • $457 – City of Oakley

$1,600 a month is not very much money. But with how well they do their jobs, that’s how much each council member should be paying the city.

The worst city in the county and these guys are talking about a raise. Unbelievable. There’s no hope for Antioch.

They’re already being paid way too much! I say cut their current pay to $700/month and that’s it! Even $700/month is too much!

Julio Aug 23, 2019 - 11:33 am

We must make sure none of these council members are reelected. None.

Tammy Aug 24, 2019 - 12:17 am

Well, I like Laurie Ogorchok because she didn’t kowtow to the STONERS and I used to Like Monica Wilson UNTIL she started kowtowing to them. Lamar is about as useful as a fart in a windstorm! The mayor? Forget it!

tom Aug 24, 2019 - 7:13 am

she voted to raise the july gay flag on our poles,,, imagine pledging allegiance to this symbol,, they ALL have got to go

Tammy Aug 24, 2019 - 5:26 pm

I wasn’t aware of that. Well, there goes Ogorchok! Thanks for the info.

These people have their regular jobs! They don’t just sit around City Hall all day. What they’re getting now, $941.20 is WAY TOO MUCH already!! It’s NOT up to them to give themselves raises! Let’s see how the rest of us would do if we decided to give ourselves a raise? Our boss would FIRE US, hands down!

These people aren’t doing the jobs they were elected to do! This city is in big trouble! More and more crimes are committed. More and more homeless are heading here and setting fires which endanger our residents!

Barbara Aug 23, 2019 - 2:14 pm

Increase? They should get a decrease in pay they are terrible. So many homeless in this town and so much crime. They have not done anything to warrant a increase. It just keeps getting worse.

Water rates was boosted three years in a row and this explains why….. It is really OK to water lawns but not OK to let water wasted down the gutters or down the shower drains while bathers sing or have sex… etc… Why? Because our sewage treatment plant , you know, just next to Costco, can only handle so much unnecessary shower water filling up the holding tanks for treatment..
Seems there is too many ignorant Antioch citizens… to preach about the difference between watering the lawns and goofing around in our shower stalls.. Big difference!
Hey, they also raised our sewage fees three years in a row…
Ignorance is expensive!
But they love our ignorance,,,,, very much to explain why they deserve their pay raises..
I want to water my long dead lawns again… please wise up!

JOKE! More blight than ever, neighborhoods overrun with Section 8, landscaping around the city in disarray, no speed bumps, worst schools in the county, etc, etc. Unreal talking about a raise. This city needs to file BK and start over.

Michael Pinson Aug 23, 2019 - 4:39 pm

This is the biggest dumpsite I jave ever lived in. In my entire life. The roadways are a mess. The schools are a wreck. They have no idea where the money is being spent. They have not one creative innovative employee frpm top to bottom, that could actually start implementing some change. I would dump everyone of you city council members mayor and head of public works and the police chief.

Arne Aug 23, 2019 - 7:23 pm

The salary increase is long overdue. Sad that so many don’t realize what they do besides a council meeting twice a month.
Antioch is now the 54th largest city in California out of 482 cities. It will have been 15 years since it was last increased.

Jp Aug 23, 2019 - 7:59 pm

So if they don’t get a increase are they going to quit……..you can justify anything if you say it long enough. They just asked the public for a tax measure for more money….it dosen’t look good. And as a citizen it feels wrong. They didn’t run for office because of the money. ……having a hard time choking this one down 40% raise

Rosemary Aug 24, 2019 - 12:12 am

C’mon, Arne! Get real! I can see some small increase (like $5) ……. but not almost $700! Ridiculous! Whatever they do, there are little or no results. We STILL have a very high crime rate thanks for them NOT shutting down places where criminals gather or live (Cavallo and Sycamore areas) ……. more and more homeless bums setting parts of the city on fire …. at least TWO PER WEEK, now!

If they can’t do anything to get this city out of the quagmire it’s been in, then they should not run for the office! Simple as that! We are the laughing stock of the county! Take THAT, Arne!

Rose Del Vecchio Aug 24, 2019 - 12:21 am

Arnie, there are reasons they didn’t get an increase for 15 years and that’s because this city has been going down the tubes with the late 1960’s — and it’s getting worse and worse! Other than South Central Los Angeles, no other city has gone down the tubes like Antioch has! It’s a bloody shame!

Abe Aug 24, 2019 - 3:39 pm

Arne! Stop kvetching! We can all see the results of their “hard work!” The city is going to hell-in-a-handbasket! It’s been ruined by too many SECTION 8 people brought here from Oakland, Richmond and other high crime areas. Why do they have to be resettled here? THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED! Then, no one is doing anything about BLIGHTED neighborhoods! Houses are in disrepeair, old rusted cars parked in driveways for years! Crap in people’s backyards visible from the streets! The city should let loose some DRONES and photograph the flammable stuff in their back yards, like old dried out Christmas trees for years ago! And, then there is the problem with the “homeless” bums!

MAJOR PROBLEMS LIST: All of equal importance

1. SECTION 8
2. BLIGHT
3. FLAMMABLE ITEMS IN BACKHARDS
4. HOMELESS BUMS

Maybe if all this is addressed AND RESOLVED, we can discuss a pay increase!

Greg Aug 23, 2019 - 9:35 pm

Thats not fair! Nobody should make money for being lazy and stupid!

Mike Mueller Aug 24, 2019 - 8:16 am

That escalated quickly…

Simonpure Aug 24, 2019 - 1:28 pm

Stop crying folks. Do something about it. VOTE! Or just sit behind your keyboard and complain.

Vito Aug 24, 2019 - 3:17 pm

We don’t vote until NEXT YEAR, Simonpure! And you bet your ass I will vote against them, except for Ogorchok if she runs.

Vito Aug 27, 2019 - 5:27 pm

I take that back! Ogorchok voted for that dumb ass LGBTXYZ flag to be flown at city hall. She’s out of the picture, as far as I’m conerned

MR Aug 24, 2019 - 6:49 pm

Wouldn’t mind the increase if they actually did some good constructive work. Not like changing names, logos, etc. Not by driving the homeless from one location to another, but maybe actually coming up with a solution. Anything I’ve seen them do is either silly or superficial.

Leslie Waters Aug 24, 2019 - 9:18 pm

Why don’t we see any homeless in Danville or Orinda or Moraga or Alamo? Why are they here? What are their cities doing to keep them out that our cities around here do not?

MR Aug 25, 2019 - 7:50 pm

You may not see them, but they’re there, trust me. Contact the local governments and ask.

Grace Aug 25, 2019 - 8:22 pm

I have relatives living in Danville and Moraga and there are no homeless anywhere there. One works for the local government!

Jimbo Aug 26, 2019 - 2:13 pm

Ha..Ha!!! If there were homeless in those cities, that would be a 911 Call!

Tony Aug 27, 2019 - 9:34 am

This is all so interesting!

The solution to all of the above mentioned problems is to vote people in that have a vision for our beloved city! There are many solutions to all of the problems mentioned. If these folks don’t have solutions, then they should have a open forum where they actually listen to the residents, and those residents that have solution driven comments can document their recommendations and have them reviewed by council staff for cost analysis, impact and possible implementation. We all must do a better job of participating and articulating our thoughts and concerns via a positive route, rather than a route that can and will be perceived as demeaning, insulting and negative = no one will listen! We can do this!

Vito Aug 27, 2019 - 5:29 pm

They don’t listen no matter how they’re approached!
