Antioch City Council Approves County Purchase of 4.79-Acre Site for Homeless Services

by ECT

On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council unanimously agreed on approving the sale of a city owned 4.79 acre Delta Fair property for $1 to Contra Costa County.

City Manager Ron Bernal told the council on Tuesday that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors had already approved the purchase of what had been presented.

In an action that appeared to be more of a formality than a discussion, the Antioch City Council then voted 5-0 to approve the purchase without any discussion or comments.

According to the Staff Report, the city and county have negotiated the purchase and sales agreement that would transfer the city owned Delta Fair property to the County for $1. The City desires to facilitate this translation to assist with the development of a County run navigation and assessment center, emergency shelter, transitional and bridge housing, and/or permanent support housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The County’s Health, Housing and Homeless Services Department received a $7.9 million Homeless Emergency Aid Block Grant in 2018 from the State of California to provide support and services to homeless people. The transfer of the Delta Fair property to the County will help leverage the County’s Block Grant funding, to allow all the grant funds, to be used for the development of the Health, Homeless and Housing Facility.

The staff report highlights construction of this facility will be completed within three years of the property transfer.

Lets sell prime land that could be a shopping development or anything. No lets sell it for a dollar to house homeless people. Who is the dumbass that thinks of this. This council meeting should be hostile. What a JOKE. Rabble rabble.

nice and fine. But where is the money to shop now?

Ipa Mar 11, 2020 - 8:55 pm

Sorry but it’s delusional to think that land would have been used for any kind of significant development. There’s already a ton of vacant commercial space here everywhere. Companies don’t want to start up because of the rampant theft by the never ending local low life population.

Um. Did you see how close it is to a baseball field and a football field. Is that a school?

This could be a good location. It is next to Los Medanos College where affordable education is a possibility for adults. It is also a lot behind the Contra Costa Housing Authority, so agents who set up Section 8 and other opportunities for housing don’t have to go far to check on clients. It is in walking distance to BART (yet a bit far) and to local shopping in Pittsburg.

This is the best location for an emergency homeless shelter and homeless services. Hopefully all goes well.

I live near this area and I never approved of this! I’m moving! Screw this state!

The homeless should be sent back to the states they came from. One way ticket back home! Very few of them are California residents and/or Antioch residents.

Richard Mar 10, 2020 - 3:29 pm

I agree totally! We have more than enough problems with our criminal Antioch residents and now we have this sorry bunch to support? They were send here via what’s called “BUS THERAPY” a one-way ticket to this coast. They have ruined our communities and now we will be setting them up to continue to do more? Enough of this nonsense!

I think this is a great idea! Just the type of services that our fellow Antioch residents need. Hopefully this can help people get back on their feet.

Grace Mar 10, 2020 - 3:21 pm

These are NOT “our fellow Antioch residents,” Anne — Most of these people are from other states bused here specifically for us Californians to take care of. This way their native states don’t have to put out THEIR tax-payer dollars to care for them. Oh yeah! Let California’s gullible, sucker tax-payer pick up the tab! How nice!

Go out and interview some of these people and you’ll get the full story.

Antioch should sell it for what it’s worth. And Antioch could use that money to help clean up down town or near that Starbucks on A street even walking around the city parks there’s needles on the sidewalks

Looks like a perfect spot, close enough to services for them, like LMC, stores, and other cities services.

I would love to know why no city council member said a word about this? Why did they vote yes? Antioch residents, your city council is failing you.

People, calm down you sound like hypocrites. Remember open borders, free health care, a check every month, free phones, sanctuary cities, and the green new deal. Keep in mind who Californians re-elected and their support for Bernie the socialist. This is just the tip of the iceberg. DeSaulnier is trying to pass a bill to keep an illegal alien here for medical care. You voted for these people and this is what we get. Feces on the sidewalk and needles in the public areas along with droves of homeless to pay for. Nice voting people.

I live downtown and I’m happy about this. Maybe now I can walk by the water like I used to… without worrying about contracting something by accidentally stepping on a needle or the overwhelming smell of fecal matter everywhere!

This is the most outrageous thing this City has ever done, and it has done some pretty outrageous things. I am 80 years old, live in Delta Estates, my husband and I sure can’t think about moving at our age, plus we really don’t want to, but the city is going to make sure our last years are miserable. Why was this kept such a secret until it was done? Don’t taxpayers have any say anymore. If it was city owned property that means I own some of it, I don’t wish to sell my part. You can contact me about giving my share back to me.

There would be 17 comments if you had left mine, thanks a lot for taking care of my 5th amendment for me.

Well I was homeless for 7 years and let me say something to all of you that have never been it is not easy to get back on your feet again and if the city of Antioch is willing to help more power to then. And to all of you that think you are so much better than them just remember that you are only one check away from being in that same place (HOMELESS YOUR SELF) So go blow it out your ass.

Coming from a homeless 29 year old female in Antioch to all of you who seem to be against this. I’m not saying some of the fellow homeless that I encounter don’t give us others a bad name . But I think we all have to remember that not all of us are homeless due to irresponsibility , addictions,or criminal charges/ backgrounds. Alot of them like myself either suffered sudden loss of work, loss of family, divorcees. Also among us are people who lost everything in devistating home disasters. But all in some form or fashion couldn’t afford to be abruptly able to obtain and sustain the help and housing needed to remain a supposed “useful member” of society. The people who are doing the right thing to get out of this situation the best way they can,are the ones who will take advantage of to the new shelter/center services to help alleviate or even completely rid themselves of the (negative transient label). We have thisn put on us due to peoples lack of actual understanding or knowledge on why each person that is homeless got to that point. The homeless that are out here who are dirty ,nasty due to not caring or bring trash with them and the addicts that are commiting crimes to get their fix etc. Are not going to be the ones that are going to take advantage of the help. So why should I or someone in my situation that desperately wants to rid myself of this; unhealthy, stressful, tiring ,crazy, frustrating, cold, hot and really all around scary life on the streets be denied these services if I’m seeking them out to better my situation? Also alot of the homeless in the area were born and raised in Antioch so maybe you should get some facts straight or stop putting the blaming it on someone else and take ownership for it instead.
