At 4:03 am Wednesday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched to a report of a residential house fire in the 5400 block of Southwood Way in the City of Antioch.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke and flames coming from the home and shooting out multiple windows. The firefighters immediately began fire attack after the flames was threatening a neighboring home and began to shoot water to protect the structure.

Firefighters attempted to enter the home, but with flames shooting over their heads, they transitioned from an interior fire attack to an exterior attack. The home was a total loss.

According to Battalion Chief Jim Huntze, had firefighters not began fire attack on the second home, it would have caught fire and could have had significant damages. Antioch Police officers were credited with evacuating the neighboring home who was awoken from the flames busting out their window.

In total, 9 people were displaced which included 6 adults and 3 children with a total of 6 patients transported to a local hospital.  At least 1 cat died along with reptiles.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
