On Tuesday, with more than 700 public comments, the Antioch City Council listened as staff read comments that were limited to 1-minute each as people expressed their opinions on whether Antioch should move forward with an ad-hoc committee on police reform.
As of 11:00 pm, the city was through approximately 50 percent of the comments and opted to continue the meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday. No new public comments will be allowed. The council hopes a third day will not be needed.
Antioch Mayor Sean Wright called the Special Meeting after a public request by Councilmember Lamar Thorpe who requested an ad-hoc committee be created to discuss and consider formation of a Police Reform Ad Hoc Committee including whether it shall review existing policies, rules, practices, customs, and general orders of the Antioch Police Department and make recommendations including but not limited to:
- Prevention of excessive use of force by police officers against members of the public, including banning police from using carotid artery restraints and chokeholds;
- Elimination of military equipment from the police department (“Demilitarization”)
- Required use of conflict de-escalation approaches by all sworn officers when interacting with the public
- Increased police accountability, including the process for receipt and review of public complaints against the police for excessive use of force, racial and/or ethnic profiling, and other police misconduct;
- Improvement of police officer candidate recruitment, screening, training and hiring practices including an analysis of policies concerning implicit bias, candidate diversity and candidate background checks; and
- Police department budget appropriations
In response to Thorpe’s request and statements made, it prompted Antioch Police Chief Tammany Brooks to issued a response to correct Thorpe on police response to 8 Can’t Wait. The Antioch Police Officers Association also came out against Thorpe in their own statement.
The City of Antioch will be issuing their notice on the continuation of the special meeting sometime Wednesday.

Sad day when the Mayor and Councilman are not on the same page as Mr. Brooks. He has done more for this city than they ever will combined.
Public Comment on Liberal Lies Reform:
“Do what an officer of the law asks you to do”
Simply Saves Lives
DO NOT BELIEVE SYSTEMIC LIBERAL LIES
Well if the police isn’t gonna clean up the homeless/blight problem in our city, we need some funding towards efforts that will. I’m tired of seeing my city turned into disgrace .
We need more military equipment at APD’s disposal .. as well as all other cities’ disposal … because criminals have some extremely powerful firearms which pretty much trump that of the police.
The equipment the police have is not the problem. Removing their weapons is the most foolish thing I have ever heard, and anyone asking them to do so have been one of the few who have not been victimized by a crime.
Taking away the police weapons would cause a rise in crime in our society. Criminals would instantly take advantage.
What happens when there is the next school shooters and they are in Antioch and the police only have hand guns while they have high powered rifles and explosives?
What happens when a home invasion goes wrong and the intruder takes you and your family hostage and they now outgun the police?
Our society is NOT the UK who have disarmed civilians and police nor is this Switzerland who REQUIRE a weapon in EVERY home.
This is a problem with the PEOPLE! Not the weapons themselves. We have a second amendment for a reason!!! The liberals are slowly eroding it to nothing. We have this right to protect ourselves and our families from over reaching tyrannical governments and invaders. Other than the weapons of mass destruction the public should be allowed the same very weapons as the police and military have.
Once the very people who are eroding this right win and see it gone do you really think your politicians and government will continue to
listen to your voices and protect your rights?
I am not saying we are at this point yet but I am saying we need to open our eyes to the systematic problems in our society and government and start passing and enforcing actual laws that matter. Not the MILLION other laws passed to satisfy corporations or politicians who did so purely to win another election. We need to open our eyes as a people and stand together.
You may not realize it now but once the second amendment is gone, the next attack will be on your first amendment.
The only lives that will matter at that point are government lives.
I totally agree with MRS post wake up people. There will be know freedom when our 2nd amendment is gone remember it’s not the gun it’s the person with the gun and when we can’t buy a gun to defend our self the criminals will still have there guns. As far as our police they have the worst job possible and I think they do a pretty good job don’t take anything away from them.
