by ECT

A new 9-minute video has been uploaded today which shows the start of the Pittsburg High School band performance where Deer Valley High School football failed to clear the field and interrupted the band Friday night.

In the video, it shows Deer Valley Football players not only once, but twice, interrupting Pittsburg High School band member as they perform. Deer Valley was penalized 15-yard for unsportsmanlike conduct while Pittsburg won the game 31-28.

The following video was posted by Jorge J. Ledgister on YouTube

According to the video:

  • 51-second mark – whistle is blown signaling the start of the band performance
  • 59-second mark – Pittsburg High Band announced over loud speaker
  • 1:05 mark – Pittsburg High Band is on the field
  • 2:18 mark – PIttbsurg High Band crosses 40-yard line and appears come close to Deer Valley football players.
  • 2:22 mark – Deer Valley Football player runs right up to the band. Several other players follow shortly after.
  • 2:45 mark – mix of band and football players are gathered along the 30-yard line.
  • 2:50 mark – Deer Valley football players are now in the middle of the bands performance
  • 3:25 mark – mix of band and football players are intermixed.
  • 3:30 mark – more Deer Valley football players enter the middle of the field through the band.
  • 4:10 mark – Deer Valley football players appear to exit the performance to the right of the field.
  • 4:58 mark – It’s announced over loud speaker to rise for National Anthem.
  • 5:07 mark – Deer Valley football players rush the band, stop before contact is made.
  • 5:09 mark – National Anthem begins
  • 5:10 mark – Deer Valley football players continue to rush towards band.
  • 5:15 mark – adults rush to the area where Deer Valley football and the band is at, begin to separate them while the National Anthem is being played.
  • 5:40 mark – Deer Valley football has exited the field.
  • 6:25 mark – National Anthem is completed.
  • 7:10 mark – Band is exiting and Deer Valley re-emerges onto the field (note – band and football separated by 25-yards).

Although there has been no update on the investigation, in an email Saturday from the Antioch Unified School District, Superintendent Don Gill stated that the incident is under review.

“Both Antioch and Pittsburg school district administration will jointly review the events that occurred prior to the start of last evening’s football game. Based upon the review, any disciplinary action needed will be taken,” said Gill.

After seeing this video its not only apparent that Deer Valley should be suspended from playing football the rest of the year, but that they need a major dose of reality on what the National Anthem means and why its so important to this country. This school has no leadership and this school board had better fix it ASAP or we will replace all of them.

All the excuses are bogus on social media, this video with the time stamp shows Deer Valley do not have any respect and the coach has no control of his team and the principal has no control over anyone.

Do the right thing AUSD, set the example or things like this will continue and Antioch will continue down a terrible path.

Agree 100% with all you said but would like to add if any of those adults that were on the field right along with the players (you can see several right in there with the players) if they were the coaches they should be fired immediately! And if they were parents they should be banned from the rest of the games at home and away too! There is NO excuse for anybody to act this way! These kids (and some adults) need to be shown what respect looks like! Way to go Pittsburg band! I am proud of how you kept going through such a rude intrudement!

Cancel the rest of the season for Deer Valley football, end of story! Fire the coach. The Principal should be given his pink slip! I am so sick of these people giving my city a bad name. Give respect, you get respect. It’s as simple as that.

DV was warming up for a football game. The “charge” was a punt team warm up. Who gave the direction to launch the band early until after the pre-game warm-up? He/she is the real cause if this. As far as the National Anthem goes, the DV team has a an active duty Army Reserve officer as a team parent, a retired Army senior NCO and a former Marine Corps officer as coaches. The players know and practice the National Anthem courtesies. Don’t lecture me about respect for the nation. This was an example of adults in charge of the venue and the events not effectively communicating-assuming “we always do it this way..” Pittsburg won a hard football game. Congrats.

Every visiting team is given notice on what events occur pregame, halftime, etc. There’s no excuse of them not knowing.

The team didn’t practice any “courtesies” during the National Anthem in this video.

Just stating facts.

Micheal, wake up. Congrats that DV has members of the military on their coaching staff….they either failed to teach respect to our country to these “wonderful ignorant” kids that charged!! the band members TWICE OR the kids were being disrespectful. Watch the video and pls explain what you see! Wow.

This is what has become of Deer Valley High. I am so glad my daughter graduated before all the thugs and punks moved in. I can only pray she moves before her boys have to go there. Deer Valley is a disgrace not only to Antioch, but to this country.

So I saw the shorten version and gave deer valley the benefit of the doubt. But now it’s clear. This act of disrespect NOT ONLY TO PITTSBURG BUT TO EVERY FOOTBALL PLAYER, BAND MEMBERS, CHEERLEADER, COACH, STAFF TEAM PARENTS, SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN, AND VETERANS IN THIS GREAT COUNTRY! The video undeniably shows the football players being lead by coaches to where to stop during national anthem then you see another coach jumping up and down wave at Pittsburg. Very intentional. SO SAD THE DEER VALLET PARENTS KEEP DEFENDING THIS PROGRAMS ACTIONS. Guess what parents your part of the problem!!!!! Way to teach your kids how to bleed their actions on someone else! By the way a good friend of mine is a coach on D.V. and I see him on video his actions saddens me.

No matter if there was some sort of communication screwup, or the band on the field early……IT DOSEN’T MATTER. Once Deer Valley saw the band eentering the field and starting a performance. ………..DEER VALLEY should have been able to figure it out and respectfully stepped off the field. I believe these kids are old enough to have some common sense here. Deer Valley was just plain wrong and very disrespectful. ….especially during the National Anthem. Didn’t your parents raise you better than that. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I don’t understand why a visiting band was playing on someone else’s field. It seems like a recipe for problems. The football players should have stayed off the filed either way, though the adults who allowed this situation to occur should be reexamine their choices that let to this occurring.

Ok pump your brakes ! As a adult who graduated from Pitt High , and who is married to a Pittsburg educator but has a son on the football team at Deervalley . I was there so here is what really happened . The Pitt football team was allowed to warm up on the field 12 mins before Deervalley . As Deervalley approached the field they found the gates closed and locked ! once on the field they were told they have the 40 yard line to the goalpost while the bands senior members are introduced , once the announcement of the seniors started pitt removed there team from the field we continued to warm up no one was asked to leave or was ever told anything else ! After the announcements the Band gathered on the the other half of the field again no warning or instructions giving to deervalley . So now the Band starts to play stopping at the 50 yard line and on the second song performance the spreads out beyond the 40 yard line and the team doesn’t move they think it’s a prank or something .After a few minutes the teams feels disrespected and goes back at the Band members ! who are running them over .As for the honoring of the star and stripes no body on our side of the field heard the start of the playing we were waiting for pitts football team to re enter which they didn’t do until after the playing not even the officials were present ? I have been to a lot of events and never seen a event where both sides weren’t on the field for the honoring ? Suspect and Confusing

Look Cornell… You present with a lot of excuses. Which means you are part of the problem. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that when they see a band… To GET OFF the field! Who ever decided according to YOU that both the band and the visiting team could share the field…. Seems completely ridiculous… Shld be fired if this is true. Which I doubt. Smh

Seems to be a lack of program control. You watch other films of Deer Valley games and you can see there is no discipline demonstrated by the coaching staff for the players. The players are simply acting out the behavior that has been modeled to them by the coaching staff. I don’t think this would have happened under the prior coaching staff. Looking at the current coaching staff’s experience and history, not sure the administration made the correct hire. They have suspended the current head coach, wonder if they have another hiring process. You get the right coach into that program and it will change the entire school. Not sure who that would be though. Previous Coach was a State Coach of the Year and had more success at DV than anyone, but that didn’t work out. Not sure if you could get a reputable coach to take this program over now with the mess it is in.

You need the administration to get on board and hire 3-4 on campus coaches, experienced coaches.

Deer Valley was very wrong for having any type of contact with the band. The coaches that were jumping up and down are not coaches, they are just guys on the sidelines, they need to be gone. And Deer Valley Parents need to start holding their children accountable.
