Good Scents Florist Ready for Valentines Day

On Thursday, I met with Good Scents Florist owner Steve Harland who informed me that he was receiving a large order of flowers just in time for Valentine’s Day on Saturday, so I decided to check it out and stop by.

Aside from his shop smelling like fresh flowers, it was filled with red roses everywhere and new assortments of flowers ready to be purchased and I really do encourage you to stop by and pick up a bouquet for that special someone while shopping local.

Aside from the flowers, I was treated to a brief lesson on “flower science” and what specialty shops do to preserve flowers versus what chain/grocery stores do—needless to say, it was impressive to hear all the extra work to ensure a longer shelf life for customers.

While I won’t give out all his secrets, he did tell me how each bucket is cleaned thoroughly because the bacteria that builds up is one of the main causes of short-lived flowers. All of his roses were cut underwater and well hydrated prior to the cut—this helps preserve them as it prevents air from getting up the stem.

From what I read online, this practice is somewhat going out the window because it’s counterproductive to flower shops because of the effort vs. cost. But when done right, such as Good Scents Florist does, it actually provides more value to the customer because you get more shelf life out of your purchase.
