20 Students Exposed to Pepper Spray at Antioch Middle School After Assault

At 12:23 pm Monday, approximately 20 students at Antioch middle School were exposed to pepper spray in the quad area of the school located on D Street in the City of Antioch.

The incident prompted a response by Antioch Police and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District who treated approximently12 students from the incident. At least two AMR units were requested.

According to preliminary information, it appears an assault occurred when the pepper spray was released by a student. At this time, the incident is under investigation and it was not known whether the pepper spray released was unintentional or intentional.

Here is a message that went out by the school district just before 1:00 pm:

Good afternoon,

This is Ms. Jones-Douglas, Principal of Antioch Middle School. During 8th grade lunch, a student discharged possible pepper spray or other irritant outside. Approximately 20 students began complaining of eye irritation. Medical personnel administered saline. All other students are in class and safe. Staff has or is contacting the parents/guardians of the students affected.
