The City of Antioch and the Antioch Unified School District held their 6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Scholarship Awards event Monday at Deer Valley High School.
The event featured a beautiful performance by Velma and Claryssa Wilson of the Negro National Anthem, presentation of colors by the Antioch Boys Scout Troops #151, performances by Divine Voices, a memorial skit by various students from the school district, music from the Antioch Church Family, a praise dance by Nashone Holmes and a keynote speech from Maggie Anderson.
The event concluded with a Scholarship Award and Presentation to students.
This celebration began in 2009 with Antioch City Council Member Reggie Moore’s desire to celebrate Dr. King’s historical contributions. This event is sponsored by the City of Antioch, Antioch Unified School District, CCC Supervisor District V Federal Glover, PG&E, NAACP East County, Republic Services, Contra Costa Building and Construction Trades, Antioch Auto Center and the Arts & Cultural Foundation of the
Congressman Jerry McNerney, Assemblyman Jim Frazier were in attendance along with and staff from Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Supervisors Glover and Piephos offices.
