First Grader and Mom Work to Trim Overgrown Tree After Property Owner Unresponsive

Thanks to the efforts of a 1st grader and her mom, Antioch residents will no longer have to walk into a street to get around a large overgrown tree on L Street near Sycamore in Antioch. The tree was trimmed Saturday.

According to Denise Cantrell, she sent in a complaint to the City of Antioch about a month ago, however, no action was taken. She first noticed the tree after she began walking her daughter to school after her van keys were stolen. On her walk to school, she  noticed three very overgrown trees.

She shared how the water main break created urgent action from the city so enough was enough when it came to the tree because a bus stops nearby with elderly in wheelchairs and kids have to get to school. She thought that forcing people into the street where they could get hit created a dangerous situation and sought to find a solution.

“I’ve seen kids walking onto the street and was sad that no one could trim it so after this water main break this past week that’s when I said enough of this,” said Cantrell. “I called the realtor last week and she said I was the second person to call and complain and that the owner told her a while ago he did it.”

Cantrell further shared how when she lived on Rodeo Circle off Hillcrest and Laurel, a complaint to the city had the issue with a tree resolved in less than a week along with a sidewalk crack.

She explained the city is slow to respond to issues in the Sycamore Corridor saying there are multiple trees that should be cut back and even an abandoned car that has been sitting for two months that has not been removed—even after several people have complained about it.

Cantrell, who has lived in Antioch for 3 years, hopes to find a different area to live when her lease is up in December.

Thank you Denise Cantrell. That area is the area Antioch has money to work on. The grant was for property north of Hiway 4.

Thank you Denise and daughter. It’s a shame that you’re going to be looking for a different area to live in (assuming you mean a different city), because you and your daughter are the type of people we need in Antioch if we’re going to succeed.

Unfortunately, the only way that the property owner will act is if someone gets hurt by the falling branches or otherwise!

That’s awesome! We have a neighbor with the same issue over our pool. Refuses to cut it & has cussed us out just for asking. We offered to pay to have her side trimmed as well. Her branches on laying on her roof. No fire hazard there!

If it is hanging over your fence you can cut it legally I think if it is just leaves dropping in your pool you are out of luck because that is what trees do.

I was under the impression that if a neighbor’s tree overhangs your yard, you are free to cut it back.

It’s ridiculous that we have to do the city’s work for them. Very nice of them.
