Delegation From Jiaxing, China Visits Antioch

by ECT

On Tuesday November 18, a group of officials from Jiaxing, China visited Antioch to help maintain a relationship as a “Sister City” with Antioch.

The delegation met with Antioch Mayor Wade Harper and City Manager Steve Duran who highlighted the benefits of Antioch as well as stated some of the challenges. They met Tuesday after visiting New York.

One a brief discussion was complete, the Mayor and City Manager provided them with a walking tour of the downtown which included Humphreys Restaurant, a potential Ferry Terminal area and the marina.

Also joining the Mayor and City Manager were City Clerk Arne Simonsen and former Councilman Allen Payton.

Jiaxing is a city of approximately 4.5 million people near Shanghai, on the Grand Canal of China, on the eastern side of the country. The city has a 7,000 year history and has 1,780 year history of being a City

The city’s mainstream industries in Jiaxing include printing, textile, leather, electricity supply and chemicals. Jiaxin is known as the “home of silk”. Textile production is one of its main strengths.

Does Antioch have an existing Sister City relationship with Jiaxing, China? Am leery of this relationship as the Chinese already have a significant presence in buying up rental property here in Antioch. It appears to me that Antioch is selling out to the Chinese. Reminds me of the story of the camel in the tent. Draw your own conclusions… http://camelphotos.com/tales_nose.html

Concerned. The whole United States has sold out to the Chinese. Yes they do hold considerable property, rental property here they do not take care of. We have a Sister City in Japan and frankly that is enough.

I don’t believe we do. We have a lot of Chinese rental units owned by non-residents we cannot contact in China. The entire US is owned by the Chinese government. They buy our bonds.
We have a sister city in Japan and have for many years.

as a resident, and in the name of transparency, i would like to know: did they contacted us, or did we contacted them?

How important can it be when your have the Mayor, The City Clerk, the City Manager and Allen Payton on the welcoming committee. And a tour of down town,( empty), the ferry terminal (not there)and an empty restaurant. Give me a break! I agree with Mr. Dietzel, who set this up?

The Sister City with Jiaxing was established back in the late 1990’s when Jim Davis was Mayor. The visit was arranged by an Antioch resident.

Arne, is there a current Sister City established with them or not? I was told this morning it has not formally been done yet. I also understand this was done with help of James and Ming the owners of Pinkies Car Wash. This is what Karl means “transparency”. Give us some back ground so we know what is going on. This is typical city of Antioch BS. Tell us the truth don’t run around the block with it.

Dang, Marty! I was not involved with this visit and was only invited to walk along with them when they walked past my office and I was introduced to the delegation. I was the only one to greet them in Chinese 🙂
