On Sunday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters responded to five vegetation fires in a period of six-hours Sunday in the City of Antioch which they say may be related to an arsonist.
At 5:38 pm, Contra Costa County Firefighters responded to Parsons Lane at Lela Way off E 18th where they battled a 1-acre vegetation fire in the creek area with a structure threatened. Firefighters were able to limit this fire to trees and brush and protected all structures. Crews were on scene for nearly 2-hours.
At 7:58 pm, firefighters were dispatched to a vegetation fire at Somerset Place off Hillcrest. The vegetation fire then turned into a structure fire after it run up against a fence and started to catch the exterior of a home on fire. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire before it made entry into the home and only the fence and exterior caught fire. Crews were on scene for nearly 90-minutes.
At 9:11pm, firefighters were dispatched to another vegetation fire on Biglow Drive and Gary Avenue which was in the area of the first fire. Crews were only on scene for 28-minutes.
At 11:06 pm, firefighters were dispatched to a vegetation fire along the railroad tracks of E Madill Street. While responding, it was determined the fire was actually on Alpha Way and structure protection was assigned as the fire was in the creek area and ran up against the fences of two homes. Firefighters were on scene for 75-minutes.
At 11:37 pm, firefighters were dispatched to a roadside fire on E Tregallas near the car wash and a few hundred yards away to Holly Ct next to Skipolini’s Pizza where a second small fire was quickly extinguished.
Contra Costa Fire also assisted the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District on a vegetation fire off Elm Lane at 7:10 pm.
According to CONFIRE, the fires were all suspicious and nature and were potentially related by an arsonist. They were continuing to investigate.

About 10 days ago, a fire was set to a fence of a house on E. Madill which abutted to the RR tracks. This was in the late afternoon and no one was home. Some of the houses and yards which abutt to the RR tracks have their backyards full of dry vegetation and old, dried up Christmas trees! Just perfect for setting ablaze!
