CONFIRE: Firefighters Knock Down Residential Blaze on Wilbur Ave.

At 5:36 pm, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews responded to a residential fire at Wilbur Ave in Antioch near the 160 on-ramp by Bridgehead.

Crews arrived on scene with smoke showing that turned out to be a brief ball of flames went into the air on the front side of the home. Crews limited the flames to the front of the home but were forced to cut into the roof to ensure there was no spread.

Quint 83, Engine 88, Engine 81, Engine 82, Quint 84 and Battalion Chief 8 all responded along with Battalion 5 out of East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

The incident caused the California Highway Patrol and Antioch Police to shut down a portion of Wilbur as crews worked.

According to the owner of the business, he smelt smoke and immediately called 9-1-1 while putting water on the home. He was very proactive in moving a folk lift to ensure the gate to the property stayed open for the fire vehicles to have quick and easy access to the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and their appears to be heavy smoke damage throughout the home. Crews were still on scene as we published this update nearly 2-hours after the fire was reported.
