Antioch Working to Remove Garbage on Wilbur Ave

Cavallo Garbage Antioch

For over a month, trash has been piling up on Wilbur Ave near Cavallo due to a homeless camp on County owned property in Antioch.

The City of Antioch first reached out to the County over 6-week sago about the garbage problem according to Ryan Graham Deputy Director, Community Development & Recreation for the City of Antioch.

“The City of Antioch has been in contact with the County for several weeks now about the conditions seen there,” says Graham. “The City does not have permission to go onto that property and clean it.”

Graham did say that the garbage along the roadway they are allowed to pick up and a garbage contractor was able to pick up that garbage earlier this week.  He says the County will have a crew on site as early as next week to clean up their property.

The City of Antioch says the responsibly to keep it clean falls on the county and is not their responsibility.

“Our position is that it is their property and they should maintain it.  Really no different than how the City would address it if it were privately owned.  As far as the people who were there, it is my understanding that they were transients and they were offered services by the county,” says Graham.

According to Mayor Wade Harper, a lot of the trash was relocated onto City Property to allow them to pick it up. He states they have been working with the county on a resolution to the situation.

Councilman Tony Tiscareno understands residents concerns about the trash and eye sore but says they are working on removing it as quickly as they are allowed to.

“It is my understanding that the city and county are communicating and will work on getting this area cleaned up. What’s frustrating is that this is out of our jurisdiction, so there’s a protocol that has to be followed that unfortunately delays the cleanup effort. There’s has to be an easier and faster way of dealing with this.”

Antioch has a similar homeless camp problem off E. 18th on Drive in Way next to Markstein Sales Company which is in the middle of a vineyard up along the railroad tracks and hidden from plain sight. Its our understanding the County is aware of that camp and also working on a resolution.

This was a start but there are many other issues in Antioch where garbage and homeless are in more prevalent places. This is Wilbur which means many folks in Antioch wont see it, just people taking a short cut from Oakley and Brentwood. Fix garbage in other places too please!

How about cleaning garbabe around our neighborhoods and schools? Just because neighborhoods have a school located close by does not mean garbage is allowed to pile up.

When I call public works their excuse NOT to pickup garbage in the city right of ways is that there is a school nearby so it is OK for garbage to be littered everywhere.

Pathetic.

I’m sure this clean up has to do with the annexation. They are afraid some investor might drive by and see it. If I was an investor I would drive all over the city and then decide not to move here. There are plenty of places they should be concentrating on.

Good points Marty.

As a member of our Neighborhood Watch group we clean up our own neighborhood when we see garbage. I am also part of a group that goes around Antioch when called by fellow members and cleans up after lame people that think it’s ok to dump their garbage wherever. Check out my Facebook page, Cleaning Up Antioch, One Home At A Time and help us Clean Up Antioch !!

Kudos to you Lori for exemplifying excellence and integrity as a citizen of Antioch. You are exactly what this city needs more of.

Funny there is no county plans to help the homeless and now breaking up camps means they will move next to you in the vacant house next door. Great work!

Reginald Jamal Brown Dec 23, 2013 - 9:35 pm

I don’t think they will move in to the vacant house next door.

If this is the annexation area there will probably be a lot of red tape and finger pointing.I hope they work it out.Trash seems to attract more trash.

ECV’sBro. I’m not saying it is in the annexation area, it may be, however anything that looks like that and is ON THE WAY to the annexation area is a priority to Mr. Harper.

For why Dec 23, 2013 - 8:12 pm

The least we can do is bring these people a dumpster and am out house

I don’t think this area is in the annexation part. I believe it will continue to be county land. Maybe since they know of the homeless problems, the county will keep this area monitored.
