The NCAA has paved the way for athletes on Tuesday to benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.<\/p>\n

The Board of Governors\u2019\u00a0action\u00a0directs\u00a0each of the\u00a0NCAA\u2019s\u00a0three divisions to immediately consider updates\u00a0to\u00a0relevant\u00a0bylaws and policies\u00a0for the 21st\u00a0century<\/a>,\u00a0said Michael V. Drake, chair\u00a0of the\u00a0board and president of The Ohio State University.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes,\u201d Drake said. \u201cAdditional flexibility in this area can and must continue to support college sports as a part of higher education.\u00a0This\u00a0modernization\u00a0for the future\u00a0is a natural extension of the numerous steps NCAA members have taken in recent years to improve support for student-athletes, including full cost of attendance\u00a0and\u00a0guaranteed scholarships.\u201d<\/p>\n

Specifically, the board said\u00a0modernization should occur within the following principles and guidelines:<\/p>\n
