In a quest to bring a private screening of the film \u201cGirl Rising\u201d to East County, Antioch resident Deborah Hicks<\/strong> is on a mission to presale a 100-tickets by May 30.<\/p>\n

The film tells the stories of nine girls from around the world who face and overcome unbelievable obstacles on the path toward receiving an education. \u00a0Girl Rising<\/em>\u00a0was created by Academy Award nominated director Richard Robbins and features performances from Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Salma Hayek and more.<\/p>\n

Hicks states the film is scheduled to be shown June 13 at 7:30 pm at the Deer Valley Plaza. Tickets are just $10.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need people to preorder, and then the film is a go for June 13,\u201d said Hicks.<\/p>\n

Hicks first saw the film at the Jack London Theater in Oakland and knew instantly East County deserved its own showing and worked to set up a showing\u2014then she realized there is a minimum preregistration requirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s enlightening, educational, and I thought it would be nice the people out here to have an opportunity to see something like this. It\u2019s not in all the theaters and can\u2019t just catch it at any theater,\u201d said Hicks.<\/p>\n

She explained that by viewing this movie, it would help girls in middle school and high school with self-esteem and their identity because the stories shared in the movie are anything but life in East County. Her goal is to help young girls do better in school and think twice about how hard life can be outside of the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are like, wow, did that really happen,\u201d explained Hicks.\u00a0 \u201cThis movie is most definitely inspiring to young girls as well as father and daughters to understand what young girls have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n
