Walnut Creek Police Say No Arrests During Saturday Night Civil Unrest

by ECT

The Walnut Creek Police Department on Sunday has released information on the civil unrest in downtown Walnut Creek on Saturday night after videos and photographs began popping up on social media.

NEWS RELEASE: Update on November 14th vandalism and civil unrest. Police seeking information regarding multiple incidents in downtown Walnut Creek

  • November 16, 2020
  • Police Case Number: 20-28260
  • Location: N. Main Street/Civic Dr.

The Walnut Creek Police Department is informing our community of multiple acts of vandalism and an assault that occurred in the downtown area on the evening of November 14th, 2020.

A group that is calling itself “East Bay Resistance” invited people to participate in what they described as a “No Justice, No Peace” protest on the evening of November 14, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. In the social media posts, participants were urged to wear masks and practice social distancing. Unlike most peaceful protests, information regarding the route and number of participants was not shared with the Police Department. Walnut Creek Police Department remains committed to ensuring peaceful demonstrators are given the right to exercise their First Amendment rights.

At about 7:00 p.m., officers saw multiple groups of people arrive with sticks and signs, and wearing helmets, dark clothing and masks. Some of the participants were wearing ballistic-type vests. The group grew to approximately 80 people as they marched downtown. Several members of the group spray-painted anti-law enforcement rhetoric on buildings, signs and sidewalks throughout downtown.

They blocked vehicles in the roadway, set a flag on fire in the middle of the street, and ultimately converged on the restaurant “Bourbon Highway” at the corner of North Main and Civic Drive. It was at this location that an altercation broke out and a bar patron was pushed to the ground. The group surrounded patrons dining outside, yelling at them and intimidating them. When Bourbon Highway staff tried to get them to leave, at least one protestor assaulted staff and patrons with pepper spray.

Although no arrests were made during the event, Walnut Creek PD is committed to holding people accountable for criminal behavior. To this end, we are seeking information that would lead to the identification of any suspects involved in the assaults, incidents of vandalism or any other criminal behavior. The suspect depicted below was carrying a pink/blue/white flag, a bullhorn, and was associated with a gray minivan. This person is a suspect in at least two acts of vandalism. If you have information related to this person or to any of these crimes, we would like to talk to you.

The Walnut Creek Police Department believes strongly in the right to peacefully protest. We also believe strongly that this right should not infringe on the rights of others or their ability to patronize downtown businesses without being verbally or physically attacked.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Detective Bryan Duncan at 925-943-5875.

Some people are afraid to do real police work, don’t become a police officer! Arrest be unruly and stop hiding. I know for a fact if I saw someone burning the American flag in the middle of the street they’re going to get knocked out Nov 16, 2020 - 7:57 am

No arrests were made? An innocent Person was punched pepper sprayed and American flag set on fire? No arrests were made? What the hell are you guys doing over there in Walnut Creek anyway? The last person I witnessed burning the American flag is still going through skin grafts!

How intelligent. These “protestors” are not even coherent enough to explain what they are protesting. Sounds more like an lame excuse for vandalism and looting.

Exactly! I hope someone is held responsible for this. Bourbon Highway has had to deal with enough just because of the Pandemic and prior civil unrest. I could say something about my feelings towards WC Police here but will refrain.

I seriously doubt that Biden and the Indian woman will ever get into the White House. This election has had way too many irregularities. I’m watching this closely.

Patrons were calling 911 but the Walnut Creek PD never showed up and their facility was just down the street! This is unacceptable! People dining out and being accosted should have something with them to protect themselves. Don’t let these hoods get away with anything Take a few down!

Good God! These hooligans were attacking people right across the street from the Walnut Creek Police Station! What in hell is going on? If we try to protect ourselves, we are the ones arrested but that should not dissuade us from carrying protection (with stopping power) with which to handle this idiocy.

Then stop voting Democrat and start pushing for Sheriffs who are PRO carry.

Roxy Nov 19, 2020 - 4:43 pm

I have never voted “Democratic” and never will! Every city and state headed by Dems has been a failure!

These thugs were blocking the roads for cars to pass and then jeopardize and safety of people dining at various venues. The Police Chief of WC is full of shit! People were calling 911 and the police station is right across the street from where these shitheads were harassing people! Not one cop was seen and they were probably watching the whole thing from their windows.

The cops were probably scared shitless to come out and handle the situation. So much for protecting the public! The people at the restaurant were mostly from other cities. Maybe a few were Walnut Creek residents.
