Update per CHP:

SUSPECTED DUI DRIVER KILLS MAN ON HWY-4 in BRENTWOOD

This afternoon, at about 4:34pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a head on collision involving two vehicles on HWY-4 eastbound, east of Balfour Road. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, it was determined that a 2018 Honda SUV was driven across the solid double yellow lines, into oncoming traffic, and collided head on into a 2013 Toyota Corolla. The solo male driver of the Toyota (51yr old man from Ripon) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of his identity. The solo male driver of the Honda was ultimately arrested for suspicion of FELONY DUI.

In the initial investigation, it appears that the solo male driver of the Honda was traveling on HWY-4 westbound (in this area HWY-4 is a two lane undivided highway) and then veered to the left and across the solid double yellow lines and directly head on into the Toyota traveling in the eastbound lane. Upon emergency personnel arrival, the driver of the Toyota was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Honda, Jan Kristian Gyllstrom, 46 of Concord, was not injured and investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested for suspicion of FELONY DUI.

If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it (that did not remain at the scene to speak with CHP) please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980. HWY-4 was completely reopened at 6:25pm.

Impaired DUI driving is 100% preventable 100% of the time. There is never an excuse for it and it cannot ever be tolerated. In this situation it tragically cost the life of an innocent person. W

Correct

That’s the problem. The drunk was too relaxed.

Why are drunk drivers who kill innocent people never charged with murder? It’s clearly premeditated as they got in the car knowing full well they could possibly kill an innocent person. And of course the drunk is still alive. Now my family in Rippon is without their father because of a stupid drunk that had no concern for anybody else and decided that he could drive home drunk. It’s too bad the truck didn’t end up dying instead of that innocent man that he ran into when you cross that double line. My prayers go out to the family who lost their father, grandfather, son, or husband. It is so tragic and so sad and there’s just absolutely no excuse for this to have happened. I hope this drunk suffers every single day until his last remembering how he killed somebody innocent because his having a drink was more important.

100% agree! Drunk drivers have no place in society and should be put to death ASAP for either injuring innocent people or killing them. We need stronger laws to protect innocent people… since as that! If you want to drink, you better know what could happen.

Not my family, I meant A family. Stupid speech to text.

Ahhh gotta love the legal drug- ALCOHOL. Commercials, advertisements, hell even Jesus made it from water. The hardest drug to withdrawal from, that can even kill you as you try to quit. But totally legal to get at any grocery store. MURICA!!

Shut it May 7, 2019 - 6:38 am

Shut up! People need to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming a substance.

Jane T May 7, 2019 - 11:48 am

Now, let’s add “recreational” marijuana to that alcohol and see how many more people are killed on our highways like they are in Colorado! Nice going, voters!

Soo sooo sad…terrible….when u drink , take uber, its simple and saves lives….this was a hard working man on his way home from work and now he will never see his family again! We need more checkpoints… during day hours! Get these drunk drivers…or as christine said, murderers, off the road!
