Superintendent: Pittsburg Unified Readies for Distance Education

by ECT

On Wednesday, Pittsburg Unified School District Superintendent Janet Schulz responded to commends made by Tony Thurmond, State Superintendent of Public Instruction on school closures for the remainder of the year.

According to Schulz, as of early Wednesday morning, there is no clear decision yet on school closures after Superintendent Thurmond say it “appears” in his message but wanted to begin preparing for distance education.

The District also announced food distribution will continue while they prepare computers for distance learning starting with the high schools, then middle schools and then elementary if needed.

Here is a copy of the letter from Superintendent Janet Schulz”

Dear PUSD Community,

Yesterday, we received communication from State Superintendent Tony Thurmond stating, “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.”

I know this news will have a large impact on our community. Here are a few things to know regarding PUSD:

Our food distribution services for students will continue throughout this time. The Federal Government changed their requirements and we are now able to give the food directly to the parents, without your children present.

We are getting our chrome books ready for checking out to families that need them. Thank you for taking the survey. If you have not already, please complete by the end of today (Wednesday). https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLScEsNh6LhyvSsRW7N…/viewform

We do not have enough devices for every student or family in our district and ask people to be mindful of that in determining their families’ needs for the survey.

We will start our distribution this week with the high schools; then move to the Junior Highs as soon as we are able, then the elementary schools. The checkouts will be done through your child’s school site. Please stay tuned for information on the schedule.

Many Internet providers have opened up their wireless access. Please see the following for information on how to access those here: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/hn/availableinternetplans.asp

You will continue to receive more information on distance learning from us,our schools sites, and teachers. Please see our webpage here: https://www.pittsburg.k12.ca.us/Page/8341

I will put out more information for our students and especially our Seniors later today.

Thank you. Please take care of yourselves and each other.

Janet
