Rep. DeSaulnier Introduces Bill to Develop Evidence-Based Solutions to Gun Violence

by ECT
Rep Mark DeSaulnier

Walnut Creek, CA – Today, Congressman DeSaulnier introduced the Gun Safety Board and Research Act (H.R. 4177), a bill to enable evidence-based solutions to gun violence.

The Board, which will be housed at the Department of Health and Human Services in recognition that gun violence is a public health epidemic, will be responsible for conducting research, evaluating federal and state policy proposals, and recommending best practices for reducing gun violence.

“If you have a health problem, you want a doctor to use research – not just an opinion – to treat it. The same kind of approach should be used to tackle the public health epidemic of gun violence. Creating a way to re-introduce quality research into the gun violence prevention debate will help us rise above partisan politics and get to the roots of the problem,” said Congressman DeSaulnier.

The Gun Safety Board would be composed of expert members from law enforcement, public health, research, medicine, gun manufacturing, victim advocates, nonprofits, and federal agencies. Using its Board member and staff expertise, the newly-created Board would use its $25 million annual budget to:

  • Conduct original research about reducing gun violence;
  • Make policy recommendations for potential federal, state, and local action to reduce gun violence;
  • Evaluate federal and state laws and proposals aimed at reducing gun violence;
  • Identify gaps in gun violence research that should be filled; and
  • Provide grants to conduct additional research and educate the public about gun violence.

Congressman DeSaulnier has authored a number of additional measures to reduce gun violence, including the Federal Law Enforcement and Public Protection Act to prevent incidents in which federal law enforcement officers’ service weapons are lost or stolen; the Modernizing Firearm Technology Act to incentivize the development of smart guns; and legislation in the California State Senate to mandate reporting of lost or stolen weapons. He is also a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in the House.

Hmmm…. a picked Board who gets to decide how much staff they need to do the “work”. Can anyone see through this charade? Each member has an interests in lobbying for changes that benefit their field. It doesn’t take a Board and 25 million to see the mentally ill that want to murder will murder whether guns are legal or not. A serial killer can take a 100 lives or a school shooting could take a hundred lives. The only difference is the timing and ease of finding the killer. There. I just solved what this board could not. Now work on educating all of us how to recognized these ill people.

We are talking about DeSaulnier here. He is not into anything unless it self serves his political career. He would spend you into debt if he thought he would get brownie points. Another politician grandstanding on the tragic deaths of others. Sick. We already have so many departments a entities to tackle this that are non political.
