Daily Question: Poor Forest Management or Climate Change?

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump sent out a series of tweets aimed at California Governor Gavin Newsom over his “terrible job” of forest management. Gavin Newsom replied Trump was “excused from the conversation” because he didn’t believe in climate change. Figured it’s a good question for our audience to discuss.

Here is the series of Tweets by President Trump:

The Governor of California, @GavinNewsom, has done a terrible job of forest management. I told him from the first day we met that he must “clean” his forest floors regardless of what his bosses, the environmentalists, DEMAND of him. Must also do burns and cut fire stoppers

..Every year, as the fire’s rage & California burns, it is the same thing-and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help. No more. Get your act together Governor. You don’t see close to the level of burn in other states…But our teams are working well together in…

…putting these massive, and many, fires out. Great firefighters! Also, open up the ridiculously closed water lanes coming down from the North. Don’t pour it out into the Pacific Ocean. Should be done immediately. California desperately needs water, and you can have it now!

To those tweets, Newsom replied:

You don’t believe in climate change. You are excused from this conversation.

Not a fan of Newsom at all but we can’t cut down all of the tress to stop fires. The money PGE invested in vegetative management should have been put into the infrastructure by placing lines underground. Not an expert but I believe the amount spent over the last 10 years was in the billions. No pun intended but they really need to look at the root cause of the problem and not the outcome. Just my $0.02.

Gavin Newsom, you reap what you sow.
Any of your environmentalists hugging trees while they burn?
Those fires are doing wonders for climate change aren’t they.
A little bit of CO2 going up?
How’s the air quality in California today?
Once again the president was right.

Mostly forest management. I spend a lot of time in the forest during the summers and can see all the dry flammable brush around, lots close to power lines. I do my part to clean up in the forest, I use the brush to make camp fires and clean up around campsites and also participate in forest thinning with permits from forest service to remove trees too close to others. Climate change is a part of it, but its all a cycle, big rain means big brush that needs to be cleared yearly, and controlled burns are great, watched a few this last year in the mountains. Then in dry years need more management to clear extremely dry areas and also create fire breaks to contain fires when they do occur.

Poor forest management! I was in the logger and timber industry for a number of years….

I feel like it’s a mixture of a lot of things. Climate change, poor forest management, PGE not maintaining their equipment, and the tree huggers fighting everytime they try to cut tree’s to clear the way from power lines.

“The president is right” only in Trumpland. In the real world, it’s just more lies.

This seems to be an odd question to ask the general public, as we haven’t really a clue what all is done/not done as far as forest management.

All this question is going to generate are guesses, name calling and lame commentary, mostly on behalf of the Trump supporters.

Fuck off Trump Nov 4, 2019 - 1:59 pm

Let’s just cut down all the trees and have no forests

Trump is right-on-the-money! Forest management involves clearing off all the dead trees wherever one can find them. Some are on state-owned properties and some on federally-owned properties. Also, keep people from building houses on forested land.

Get ready for this one first off both these idiots should not be talking about anything to do with the forest but asking people who have an idea on how to actually take care of it do it ones from New York ones from San Francisco two major cities on opposite sides of the coast the forest is in rural mountainous areas which is mostly controlled by the US Forestry Department or BLM land some private by PG&E and others yes Forest management needs to be done it can simply be sustainable where the Greenpeace Tree Huggers will be happy and the gun-toting Republicans as well we used to have many logging companies and Mills in this great state that wood mill private owned lands and some forestry through contracts with the government all this was cut down and closed in the late 90s which not only hurt small mountain towns but a very fragile ecosystem at the same time the answer is tree farming open logging back up but in a smart and sustainable way where they remove trees clean brush and plant new trees to grow and Thrive again fire is actually Nature’s way of doing this old dry trees burn and are cleared out Pinecone shoot all over the place from The Embers of the fire and new trees grow yes less water has a had an impact on more trees dying and yes poor Forest management has to do with it as well but the root cause is dim simply arguing over their own political agendas and opinions instead of seeing a very simple and wonderful solution it is done in certain areas don’t believe me Google sober wheeler Strawberry Valley California right next to Paradise where the fire happened I’ll go look up in that area for yourself or go down south to shaver and Huntington Lake areas and look at the difference one has smart tree farming one is closed completely to Timber cutting city Folk opinions don’t matter to us up here they can’t grasp what their actions do instead of just do what they want smart tree farming will create jobs for small local towns as well keep the forest clean and thriving both parties would be happy remember trees suck in CO2 and breathe oxygen and trees also produce wood for Timber so the careless people can continue to build but our forces will remain and I’ll have a job I wish Washington would put a part their political bias b******* and have a conversation maybe they would find the solution

East County Today loves these questions to pit Democrats vs Republicans. It’s pathetic. Thank you for contributing to the divide, Mike. Get a life.

Pretty sure we are not the ones tweeting or making policy, but thanks

You folks should read Brian Rice’s (President of the California Professional Fireghters Association) response:
http://www.cpf.org/go/cpf/news-and-events/news/cpf-president-brian-rice-responds-to-president-attack-on-ca-fire-response/

Once again, Trump showing he’s out of touch with the common man. I guess skating through life with a silver spoon up your rear will do that to you. And the fact that he denies the science of climate change, is a complete disgrace from our nations leader.

They need to bring in the off-roading community! I am sure the OHV crews will be eagerly willing to help by cutting in new fire roads and some trails that can be used as fire breaks. In return, the off-roading community gains access to new trails where the OHV community can tread lightly and be the eyes and ears of the forest along with the forest rangers.

We can blame Newsom for the condition of our wildlands/forests, because he has been in office long enough to make changes, however like those before him they are all lax on changing Brown’s De-Forestation laws that he put into place his first time in office. The reason why, they don’t want to upset the Environmentalist who pushed for it.

Now after over 30 years of no cleaning of the forest doors, no thinning of our forests, no clearing branches from High Voltage Power Lines and no fire break maintenance except on privately held property.

I own a share in a 14k ranch in Tehama County. Every year our own staff build a nice fire break around the entire ranch about 15′ wide, trees and flammable material are cleared another 10′. Dry brush and needles are cleared throughout the Ranch near trails to lessen fire possibilities. CalFire appreciates our prevention work so much, between them and Tehama County Fire, we recently received Fire Engine for fighting Wildlands fires to supplement our other equipment.

My opinion as a PG&E customer is Paradise and Santa Rosa both burned from a fire that started several miles away. How did it travel so far to destroy these beautiful places? Poor forest management is how. PG&E spent billions moving the state into the ‘green’ energy economy in order to meet the state mandated targets. Yes the politicians that set the policies are also to blame for the new normal of large fires and expensive ‘green’ energy.
