UPDATE per CHP

FATAL CRASH on HWY-4 TONIGHT IN CONCORD

Tonight at about 8:27pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a two vehicle collision on HWY-4 westbound, just east of Port Chicago Highway, in the city of Concord. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, it was determined that a blue BMW M3 and a silver Toyota Camry collided and then the BMW subsequently went off the roadway and plummeted down onto the Railroad tracks at Kinne Blvd (which is below the highway and next to the old Concord Naval Station). The solo male driver (35yrs old from Oakland) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of his identity.

In the initial investigation, it appears that the solo male driver of the BMW was traveling on westbound HWY-4 at a reported high rate of speed and for unknown reasons drove into the dirt center median and lost control of the BMW. Then veered across all lanes of traffic towards the right shoulder and subsequently drove off HWY-4 and plummeted down to the railroad tracks below on Kinne Blvd, causing major damage. The driver was ejected and found a distance away from the BMW and was pronounced deceased on scene. The solo male driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured and remained on scene for the investigation.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision as it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.

Check back for updates.

Probably two idiots who don’t know how to drive and should never have gotten a DL, if they ever did.

Seriously. Have some respect. Don’t have any? Maybe it’s wiser to keep your opinion to yourself.

Rocketman Jun 10, 2019 - 1:42 pm

I have absolutely no respect for anyone who drives in a manner which results in serious injuries to others.

You’re right, Elizabeth! Once the investigation shows who made the initial move which caused others to take unworkable evasive action, that driver should be forever barred from driving and have the police make sure he or she is never seen on any street nor freeway again.

Sprinter Jun 10, 2019 - 1:28 pm

I would bet that this was not the first time this driver pulled some sort of dangerous stunt.

I turned on the news. It was the 2nd story at the top of the hour, 8am. You never think it’s one of your own… I got a call 1/2 hr later..This time it was. My cousin is gone :'( He was just here. Now he’s gone. 35 years, family, birthdays, holidays, so many pictures we can’t even bear to look at right now….. still in shock. His name was- is Eric Vaughn. I can’t even write anymore………

I’m so sorry Trish!!! We were on the freeway and saw the smoke. We pulled over and my husband was the first person to go down and see if the driver was ok. Him and my son found him. They prayed over him and were devastated 🙁 My heart goes out to you!!! It has effected our family and we didn’t even know him.
