City of Pittsburg Launches Propaganda Website

by ECT

On Thursday, the City of Pittsburg announced the launch of the East Bay 100, a website that will feature 100-word stories and videos on the people, news, events and ideas shaping Alameda and Contra Costa counties—specifically promoting Pittsburg.

The move comes after the City Council on May 5 approved the item at a cost of $119,014 over a five-year period.  Included in that package is 6-monthly 100-word articles or 100-second videos. This is funded through the Pittsburg Power Company account (Fund 590).

Not factored into the cost is the cost of staff time to put together the content.

According to City Manager Garrett Evans, at the May 5 meeting, he explained this would allow Pittsburg to market itself throughout the Bay Area and focus on Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Vice Mayor Jelani Killings asked whether the intent was to reach outside of Pittsburg or to residents.

“The primary goal for the 100 Company is an economic development tool not only for retention of your business base where you will have several articles talking about things like what is available through Workforce Development or other types of programs that they can utilize but it is also for attracting in Alameda and Contra Costa County,” explained Evans stating the newsletter and city manager report is focused on the residents.

Killings questioned the use of East Bay 100 because if all it does is talk about Pittsburg, it would be misleading and suggested they brand it as Pittsburg and not East Bay.

Evans stated the challenge was if they wanted the Pittsburg 100, that Pittsburgh already has one which would create confusion on which Pittsburg was being used. They also looked at Delta 100 which they opted against.

“We are apart of the East Bay and felt this was a good way to convey Pittsburg and our Delta Six region and focus on Alameda,” said Evans.

Killings asked about how this impacts their Discover and Visit Pittsburg concept and if it would be worked in conjunction of one another.

Evans explained how writing 72-articles a year, it requires planning and still working to piece it together such as working with the California Theatre on articles, the workforce development board, the business community as well as the chamber to incorporate some of the things they are doing.

The council then voted 5-0 to approve the contract.

Thank you for calling this out for what it is. This may be the worst city council to date. They never question anything. They are asleep at the wheel while the city is basically at a stand still. They overpaid for a program and will get little, if not any return. I hope you follow this up down the road.

Stupid. WordPress templates are $50 and you don’t need a third party company to run this. Pittsburg got screwed.

Promoting Pittsburg? When opening the website … why do I see a picture of Mt Diablo taken near Highway 24 in Lafayette?

This isn’t any more ridiculous than what Antioch has been doing. Cheaper though.

ECT Jul 12, 2019 - 12:49 pm

Wrong… Antioch is paying their company $55k per year to run Antioch on the Move.

do Jul 12, 2019 - 1:54 pm

Did Antioch not spend almost a million dollars on all of there rebranding crap they maybe only spending 55k a year on running it but the start up of the videos and website was almost a million dollars

As long as they put out they are the proud partner of Dow Chemical, slapped with an intent to sue by Communities for a Better Environment after it was found out that Dow has been emitting hazardous waste into our air (and water) since at least 2014. As long as they include “come to work for Koch Bros Carbon LLC, where tons and tons of petcoke are being stored right on the shore of the Delta. As long as they put out, oh I could go on, but… you get the picture.

My grandparents live in Pittsburg and had hoped that revamping downtown and then the rest of the area immediately close to it (10th Street) would make it more attractive. Not that Pittsburg would become a dining and entertainment destination. I think the Pittsburg city fathers thought they could create another Walnut Creek. LMAO! Then, Jerry “the Dope” Brown pulled the money earmarked to make Pittsburg applear LESS of a slum . . . and the rest is history.

Here is something they can write about. When I lived on West 10th a few years back there was literally a shooting on every corner, up the street at the convenience store, the swat team raided the house at the end of the street. A man shot himself in the leg across the street from my house during a drug deal. My neighbor had a mob of angry people show up to his home to kick his ass, his roomate shot one of those people in the stomach. I watched as he ran after them while trying to unjam his weapon. A car was sideswiped on Clipper and West 10th and flipped on its side almost rolling into the house next door. These are the things you can expect while living or even visiting Pittsburgh. The Police station is less than a mile away. Oh and they shoot at the trains as they pass. This and more all happened in little under FOUR YEARS.
