City of Oakley Names Dean Capelletti as Next Chief of Police

On Tuesday, the City Oakley announced the hire of Dean Capelletti as its next chief of police.
Capelletti has been serving as Captain of the La Habra Police Department and also has experience in the private sector. Oakley had been looking for a chief of police after Eric Christensen retired in May.
“Throughout the hiring process, we were looking primarily for an experienced candidate who we knew would care for the City of Oakley just like we do,” said City Manager Bryan Montgomery. “Chief Capelletti brings great energy and passion for the law enforcement profession and is very skilled in working at building relationships of trust which is especially important in these unique and challenging times. I know Chief Capelletti will fully devote himself to the protection and service of the people of Oakley.”
According to the City of Oakley in a release, Capelletti’s paternal great‐grandparents emigrated from Italy to Peru and his father was born in Peru. His mother is Mexican‐American and he speaks Spanish. Chief Capelletti is a Bay Area native, moving frequently throughout the area, including Sonoma before moving to Southern California during his High School years.
His father and sister both live here in Contra Costa County and he is a proud 49ers season ticket holder. Professionally, Capelletti has 18 years of extensive experience in most areas of law enforcement and holds a Masters’ Degree in Public Administration with an emphasis on Organizational Leadership and he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
“My career goal has always been to find a quality position in the Bay Area, where I feel most at home,” said Capelletti. “I could not be more excited to have found such an exciting opportunity. I can’t wait to get to know and become part of the Oakley community.”
Capelletti was selected from a talented field of candidates for both his strength as an officer and his down‐to‐earth personality. He says some of his first acts on the job will be reaching out to our schools and just exploring the community. As a candidate for Oakley Police Chief, he stood out as an authentic team‐builder, well prepared to lead our amazing OPD team.

Chief Dean Capelletti will start on the beat on September 28th.

Captain of Services, Dean Capelletti

Dean Capelletti was appointed to Police Captain of Services on January 7, 2017. Captain Capelletti began his career with the La Habra Police Department in 2002. He has, over the course of his career, served as a detective, was the Sergeant for the Professional Standards Bureau, overseen the Investigations Bureau, was responsible for the management of the jail and oversaw the associated contractual employees. Among Dean’s many contributions, he also served as the department’s Certified Composite Artist, and his work has been instrumental in helping solve a number of cases.

Dean’s commitment to serve his department and community have earned him numerous accolades, including the MADD Deuce Award and a Lifesaving Medal. He has served as an Explorer Advisor, a Field Training Officer, a member of the Range Staff, a North County SWAT Team Leader and Team Supervisor, and has mentored department academy recruits. He also participates in the yearly Special Olympics Torch Run, and assisted with the department’s Open House.

Captain Capelletti holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Police Management from Union Institute and University and a Master of Public Administration with Specialization in Organizational Leadership from National University.

Good luck Dean. Antioch has lost control. I hope you get backing 100 percent by your council and keep Oakley from loosing control. We are in tough times , east county is falling apart. We need strong leaders. Wish you well.

May I offer word of advice to the new Chief? Please don’t listen to Montgomery. You report to the department and the people. Montgomery and the city council forgot the meaning of public servants. Best of wishes.
