CA Police Chiefs Respond to Comments Made by UC Davis Professor

by ECT

Last week, the California Police Chiefs Association sent out a letter to the UC Davis Board of Regents regarding comments made by UC Davis Professor Joshua Clover.

The letter was in response to the Aggie, a UC Davis newspaper, which they uncovered comments made by Clover saving that “police need to be killed.”

Here is a copy of the Letter that was provided Monday by the California Police Chiefs Association:

University of California Board of Regents Office of the Secretary and Chief of Staff to the Regents 1111 Franklin St.,12th floor Oakland, CA 94607

RE: University of California at Davis, Professor Joshua Clover

Dear Board of Regents,

The California Police Chiefs Association believes firmly in freedom of speech. However, we were alarmed to learn that University of California at Davis Professor Joshua Clover reportedly advocated for violence against and the killing of police officers on social media and in newspaper reports. The California Police Chiefs Association formally requests that you investigate this matter. We recognize the University of California Davis’ statement condemning Mr. Clover’s alleged comments. But condemnation is not enough. If he made those statements, he should immediately and unequivocally be fired. Such hateful rhetoric from any individual or group should not be tolerated. Clover’s alleged statements on social media were first reported by the Aggie, a UC Davis newspaper, and included statements such as;

“People think that cops need to be reformed. They need to be killed.”

“I mean, it’s easier to shoot cops when their backs are turned, no?”

“I am thankful that every living cop will one day be dead, some by their own hand, some by others, too many of old age.”

Tragically, violence and murder of peace officers in the United States is on the rise. Last year, 144 police officers were killed on duty, a 12% increase over 2017.  Clover’s alleged rhetoric is reprehensible, attempts to divide us, could incite violence and is unbecoming of a University of California professor.

Our association, along with the many brave men and women in the law enforcement profession, work valiantly under often dangerous circumstances to protect our communities while striving to build positive, trusting and peaceful relationships with our citizens based on mutual respect.

We encourage you to swiftly and deliberately address the alleged statements.  My colleagues and I are available to address your board in person, participate in a community forum or do whatever it takes to help educate you and your constituents about what we do – and who we are.

Thank you and please feel free to give me call if you have any questions,

Sincerely,

David L. Swing President

They let this sick guy say anything he wants because he’s on the correct side politically.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy gets a ticket for speeding 27 mph in a 25 mph zone.

What a “Mental Furball” …. We (hopefully) all believe in freedom of speech, but this guy is a major league dickhead.

The scary part is this guy is a Professor. So he’s teaching kids in the classroom, and he’s probably teaching them that it’s ok to kill cops. I don’t care if he has tenure. This guy needs to be fired

The agenda of this far left so called Professor is outrageous. Our educational system produces and promotes this type of thinking far too often. Termination of employment should be swift but our teachers union of leftists protects these socialists. What a sad day for all professors. Mr. Clover needs to be evaluated before he harms someone.

This guy needs to be fired immediately!! He is a very sick individual and needs to have serious consequences for this, regardless if he’s far left politically!!! If the left allows this outrageous behavior, then it only shows that they are no better themselves!!
