Antioch Resident Provides 120 Handmade Blankets to Antioch Animal Services

by ECT

The animals at Antioch Animal Services will be sleeping a little warmer and cozier thanks to a donation of 120 handmade blankets that were delivered to the city animal shelter on L Street in Antioch, Saturday morning.

Antioch Resident, Kathy Augusta, an avid animal lover and dog owner wanted to do something special for the shelter animals to make their stay at the city run shelter a bit more comfortable. Thanks to a grant funded by Pat Kramer through the Building Communities Near and Far Program, Kathy was able to purchase the materials and supplies needed to make the blankets.

“In all, we purchased 195 yards of material, a big plus was it was all on sale” said Augusta.

On Monday, September 23rd, residents, along with the members of Young Ladies Institute #101 gathered at Father Vicente Parish Hall at Holy Rosary Church in Antioch to assemble the blankets.

“I expected a few people to come to help us make the blankets and was absolutely thrilled to see over 55 people show up. In 2 hours, we were able to assemble 120 blankets in 3 different sizes; 2′ x 2′, 4’x 4′ and 4 x 5′.”

The blankets are all hand knotted, easy to sanitize and get softer the more they are laundered.

“It bothers me to see the animals laying on cold concrete or steel cages” said Augusta, “the blankets will hopefully not only provide some comfort; but, will also provide a touch of home to the animals awaiting adoption or awaiting their owners to claim them.”

After unloading the boxes of blankets that were blessed by Father Robert Rien during Feast of Saint Francis on Friday, October 4th at St Ignatius Church in Antioch, Vince and Kathy Augusta, along with Grantor, Pat Kramer, were accompanied by Antioch Friends of Animal Services President and Founder, Barbara Sobalvarro through Antioch Animal Services to present the dogs and cats with their new blankets that were not only blessed, but were handmade, with love, by animal lovers hoping to Build Communities Near and Far.

This story brought tears to my eyes! What a wonderful thing to do! I’m tempted to go and buy some soft fleece type fabric and assemble some here at the house …… What size are the blanket?

2×2, 4×4 or 4×5. The “blizzard type fleece” material goes on sale starting tomorrow 10/10 at Joann Fabrics in Pittsburg Century Plaza, plus they offer a 15% military discount if you are active or prior military, and they might extend it if you are not, but are with someone at the time of purchase.

The “Blizzard type fleece” is nice and thick and very warm. I bought some of it for our pets and they can curl themselves right into it .. but then they also jump under the covers … the little rascals!

I’m heading for JoAnn’s tomorrow and getting some of this fabric. Thanks for the heads-up, Kathy.

Kathy, if you and your group will be holding something like this in the near future, it might be good to put an announcement on NEXTDOOR under the “General” or “Events” category so people can contact you to be included.

So beautiful the blankets are. Thank you for donating them to the animal shelter from the bottom of my heart and beyond. I wish we could drum up more community help for Antioch Animal Services since the disgusting City Council thinks it is better to spend a million dollars trying to rent and Antioch into a town that attracts business. Maybe the light to do first things first and clean up Antioch first. Animal Services has never been funded to even the bare minimum but they seem to have tons to waste on transients and their damage and ugly logos.

“rent” is supposed to be “rebrand”
