Vandals Damage $50k Worth of Property at Byron Hot Springs

The folks who lease the Byron Hot Springs property are asking for the public’s help after vandals drove through a gate using a John Deere Tractor while damaging two well houses before lighting a tractor on fire.

The vandals apparently drove the tractors until they were unable to run causing damage to the property. One tractor was lit on fire while another kept being driven until it stopped working. Both tractors were stolen from another property—Friday nights damaged is estimated at around $50,000.

Sometime Friday night the incident occurred where the Contra Costa County Sheriff, Alameda County Sheriff and East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded.

This isn’t the first case of vandalism, within the past year; they have had multiple cows and calves killed. Fencing is replaced on a weekly basis, gates being ripped off by pickups so people can gain access to the property.  There are also several cases of people dumping garbage, tagging the hotel with spray paint, and people shooting off guns.

If anyone has any information about who may have been behind this incident, please contact the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

…a bunch of bored hicks who can’t figure out how to spend a night without dragging someone down. It is sad that this is all their minds and hearts lead them to do.

If they would have gotten injured they would sued the owners.

No respect. Very sad and maddening.

This is act is simply shameful. I hope they consider installing security cameras and catch these people. If they don’t have the resources to guard the property then maybe its time to bulldoze it back into the ground. The old hot springs is nothing more than a magnet for crime. I’m not sure there is much interest or financial ability to restore that place. Poor, poor Byron just like Knightsen it seems to be clinging to an awkward era while everyone else has moved on.

The Byron Hot Springs is planned for a resort and gold course in the future. They should start the demo now.Its been a magnet for the high school kids to hang out and do dirty deeds for too long.

ECV’s Bother

A resort or golf course? Now that’s funny, but It is never going to happen, even if it had a “Gold” course. In 1914 Byron may have been a destination, but sadly that is no longer the case. It’s just a bump in the road to many other places that have much more to offer. Communities that have failed to evolve,(Byron and Knightsen) have failed for a reason. At this point in time, a resort/golf course isn’t even a pipe dream except by a few, clinging to memories of days gone by. I agree with Stan, you could bulldoze it and it wouldn’t be missed (except for a few hayseeds on the “Hysterical Society”).

They put a golf course about 10 miles away on the altamount pass and that went belly up in a year. There is a reason that all those wind turbines are there. It would be cool to see the Hot Springs restored, but I can’t see it making any money.

A golf course would not thrive in Byron as they can’t even keep a food diner open. If East County really wants to make this land useful, turn it into what Sheriff Joe has in Arizona. They can camp the grounds and work off their crimes by fixing up the place.

Stan and JIm have it in a nut shell!

Perfect! Maybe they could house “ECV’s bother” there.
He would fit in fine alongside the livestock.

On a serious note, I agree that nothing is going to financially survive out there. The world is full of people that look before they leap into business ventures. Restoration of an outdated “resort” or another golf course has no real chance, now or in the future. May as well mow it down and prevent the temptation of vandalism in the future. What is one less building in Byron? That place reminds me of a ghost town, minus the ghosts.
