At 4:39 am Saturday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters and police responded to a report of a vehicle crash at Buchanan Road near Meadows in the City of Pittsburg.

Firefighters arrived on scene and reported CPR was in progress.

Pittsburg Police have closed down the roadway on Buchanan Rd. both eastbound and westbound traffic from Meadows Ave to Somersville Rd.

Sunday Update

Fatal Hit and Run Collision Investigation
Location: Buchanan Rd. / Meadows Ave.

Responsible vehicle: Unknown Make & Model Red Vehicle (Possible Ford F-150 Pickup w/sunroof); Unknown Plate

On Saturday morning, October 20, 2018, around 04:30 A.M. Pittsburg officers responded to the area of Buchanan Rd. near Meadows Ave. for a subject unresponsive in the roadway. The subject appeared to have been walking when they where struck by a vehicle.

The roadway of Buchanan Road was closed to traffic for several hours while the Investigations Division and the department’s Fatal Accident Response Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

During the course of this investigation, it was determined that the responsible vehicle had been traveling eastbound on Buchanan Rd. The pedestrian is believed to have been walking westbound along the south shoulder of the roadway.

The vehicle struck the pedestrian causing fatal injuries and fled the area. The pedestrian was later identified as Michael Watkins (35 Years) out of Antioch.

Investigators were able to utilize the city’s video surveillance system, as well as video from area businesses, to obtain a description of the responsible vehicle.  Investigators are following up on several leads in an effort to identify the responsible driver and vehicle.
